Iran protest cancelled as leaked election results show Mahmoud Ahmadinejad came third
Iran's reformist presidential candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi has called off a major rally to protest last Friday's election results, amid claims police had been cleared to open fire on protesters.
By Colin Freeman 15 Jun 2009
Supporters had been due to turn out en masse in Tehran on Monday afternoon, despite government warnings to stay off the streets.
But this morning, a statement on Mr Mousavi's campaign website announced that the demonstration had been postponed although it said Mr Mousavi would go to the site to ensure any supporters who showed up remained calm.
Iran's Interior Ministry said Mr Mousavi would be responsible for any consequences if he went ahead with the protest.
Mr Mousavi's cancellation of the protest came as sporadic disturbances continued around the Iranian capital, and reports circulated of leaked interior ministry statistics showing him as the clear victor in last Friday's polls.
The statistics, circulated on Iranian blogs and websites, claimed Mr Mousavi had won 19.1 million votes while Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had won only 5.7 million.
The two other candidates, reformist Mehdi Karoubi and hardliner Mohsen Rezai, won 13.4 million and 3.7 million respectively. The authenticity of the leaked figures could not be confirmed.

I maintain my contention that this whole thing is a fraud perpetrated on the Iranian people and the world. I predict that Ahmadenijad will be thrown under the bus and his opponent seated, to cheers from the Iranian people and congratulations from Obama. All the while, the mullahs still have their hand-picked candidate (one of four) in power. Net result: no change, but the illusion of some form of popular power has been created.

Does anyone think that Ahmadinejad and his supporters in the basij, having been declared the winner, will accept a reversal?

I don’t think so. Obama wants to look like the good guy, and he appeared to give tacit approval to the Iranian fraud he made sure to say - THEIR sovereignty *Something denied to Israel* and that the US was staying out of it.
I’m not sure Mousavi is the choice of the Ayatollah, I don’t think he (ayatollah) realizes the true will of the Iranian people. I think there is probably shock that so many dare to defy him. I also think Ahmadenijad will have to be run over by a bus before he gives up his real or imagined power.
To: Steelfish
That would be a very distant third.
If its true.

And it will still be a fraud even if the "reformer" is seated. After all, he was also an approved candidate only marginally better than Ahmadenijad. Basically he wants to tone down the rhetoric but continue down the nuclear path.
True reform will only come with the removal of the mullahs from power.

I believe Obama has been quietly dealing with Iran since before he was elected. The Iranians aren't going to put their nuclear weapons program on the bargaining table. But they might offer to tone down anti-U.S. rhetoric and stop their support of insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan. In exchange Obama would cut off material and diplomatic support to Israel, lift sanctions and give the green light for U.S. companies to do business in Iran. Or something like that.

"to cheers from the Iranian people and congratulations from Obama. All the while, the mullahs still have their hand-picked candidate (one of four) in power. Net result: no change, but the illusion of some form of popular power has been created."Such a scenario actually has great potential for the Ayatollah.
By playing Obama and the world, the Ayatollah gains diplomatic points that takes the spotlight off while they continue their mission to destroy Israel and create the chaos necessary for their boy Mahdi to emerge and instill Islam throughout the world.

We better use this election as a study of how to deal with the 2012 ACORN-controlled election.....which will be a landslide for oscumbo....
