I was in Esfahn during the revolution. Been through the power shutdowns at night. I could wach the flames from the burning tires and see the flashes from the Centurion Tanks cannos andf hear the running gunfire. If I recall correctly, Nasiri (head of Savak) was killed on Feb 22, 1979

I don’t know everything there was to know about the Shah, but he was a friend of the West. His nation was quite open during the Shah’s rule. Christians were treated well. The women in the nation had far more rights.

Look what happened after Carter screwed it up. And yet Carter still thinks he was a gifted world class negotiator.

I saw what the Shah had in vision for his country. The allowing of women to wear their hair uncovered, girl scouts, hospitals, real highways and the ability to kick Iraq's ass in 3 days. I was a contractor in Iran supporting the Shah's IIAF F-14 program. Lost many friends and acquaintances during the revolution due to their loyalty to the Shah and their subsequent executions.

I left Iran on March 31, 2009. I remember martial law, the return of Khomeini to Iran,and the takeover of our Embassy on February 14, 1979. Khomeini and the mullahs seized the levers of power killing off the opposition, including their fellow revolutionaries.

Nassiri was imprisoned in late 1978 and was executed on February 16 by a firing squad. Khomeini entered Iran on February 1.

As I recall the tale is went something like Carter solicited a bribe from the shah. He wanted some of his GA buddies to get a kick back on some const. jobs in Iran. The Shah said no and Carter got the CIA to undermine the Shah's regime.
If all that is true Carter once again wins the prize for the worst ever potus,with the possible exception of the present holder.

Obama should be announcing now that the US policy is regime change in Iran. He needs to put pressure on the mullahs and their allies while the crowds are in the streets.

I’m very sorry to hear that. I understand what you’re talking about.

That was before Iran started to look weak in the eyes of Hussein, who eventually attacked.

Carter had us in a position at that point, where we couldn’t win no matter what we did. If Iran or Iraq won, either could have dominated the Middle-East, and we certainly didn’t want a strong anti-US Islamic government doing that.

Then the left faulted us for trying to make the war end in a dead heat. They destabilize, then blame us for trying to deal with things so that the worst case scenario won’t take place.

The Vietnam/Iranian/Iraqi/Afghanistan/Pakistan/Israeli problem with allies, is who can trust us if we continue to sell folks out? Right now Obama is bringing that to the European theater as well, dissing our allies there too.

I honestly think the Europeans must be gasping for breath, perhaps realizing their dreams of a neutered U.S. just might come true. Then who will defend them while they nip at their heels?

Europe is in big trouble if Obama take measures to strengthen the Middle-East trouble makers. And it looks as if he may just do that.

I can’t speak to that, but Carter’s big thing was that he wasn’t going to play ball with dictators. He was only going to associate with enlightened leaders. No, seriously! He was a pie eyed eight year old school girl, going to turn things around, make up for all the evil prior administrations had done. Sound familiar?

He undercut the Shah, and something a hundred times worse cropped up in his place. Now Obama is undercutting many people, and something much worse will crop up in their place.

Guys like Carter and Obama are extremely dangerous. They don’t have a clue, and when they have worked their magic, the people who have to clean it up get all the blame.

Obama thinks Israel is evil. He thinks European nations are evil. If it’s white, it’s suspect. No good can come of this.

Our allies form Bermuda to where ever, are going to be paying the price for his terrorist relocation demands.

Good nations will either pay heavily, or actually fall to insurgencies brought about by these people.

There is no doubt that the Shah placed women in power in his cabinet and there were more women in the Iranian parliament than were in the US Congress. However, the Shah's "Western ways," contributed to his downfall as many fundamentalists were against these liberalizations. And the Shah's White Revolution angered the mullahs because it took away some of their lands and gave women the right to vote.

That said, the Shah was no saint. There was widespread corruption and much of the oil wealth was not shared with the people. And Savak's brutality was well-known. Still, Iran was far better off under the Shah than the mullahs. And US interests were better served with the Shah in power than Khomeini who began the modern militant Islamic fundamentalist movement and created the world's biggest state sponsor of terrorism. We are reaping the results now from one of the biggest foreign policy blunders in our history. Jimmy Carter was a disaster.
