LONDON (AFP) Beatles legend and famous vegetarian Paul McCartney was joined by John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono Monday to launch an appeal for "meat-free Mondays."
McCartney said going vegetarian, even for just one day a week, was good for the environment because of research suggesting it cuts greenhouse gas emissions from the world's livestock population.
"I thought this was a great idea. To just reduce your meat intake maybe by one day a week and this would seriously benefit the planet," he told reporters, alongside Ono and a bevy of other stars including Kelly Osbourne and Moby.
Lennon's widow -- famously blamed for splitting up the Beatles, but clearly reconciled and on good terms with McCartney now -- added: "Give up one day and then it will be two days maybe. It's a very, very intelligent idea."
In a video on his website, McCartney noted that the campaign had already been launched in the United States and Australia.
"It?s kind of easy to do. You?ve had too much over the weekend anyway and you?re all running down to the gym to try and work it off so just have a meat-free Monday," he said.

Saw the other day that Clint Eastwood was a vegetarian. If that is true, that would be a good reason to convert.
I might have a day each week where I have say, peanut butter for lunch followed by black bean tacos for dinner. I guess that qualifies me. But I certainly am not going to do it because these idiots say so (Yoko, Moby, and Kelly Osbourne having always been idiots and Macca having been one for most of the last 40 years).
Just when I’d gotten used to Fridays...
Celebrities. Harnessing the awesome power of stupidity.
And we're halfway there! - Just a little more effort troops....
If this catches on, I’ll be participating in an exclusively meat Monday. Sausage, bacon and eggs for breakfast. fried chicken for lunch, and steak for dinner!
I saw “Meat Free Monkeys” too! LOL!
These people have way to much money and time on their hands.
How about a Socialist free UK?
I’m going to eat meat today (and if this “meat-free Monday” really catches on I am going to buy meat on Mondays too, becuase of the lowering of demand!
Hamburgers for us tonight. Sir Paul is invited but sorry I can not bring myself to invite Yoko.
What was John thinking?
You win!

Eastwood looks enemic and pastey too.
I do not worship trees and nature like a druid so on Mondays I will make sure to eat two servings of global-warming-producing meat in defiance of the neo-pagans.
Is meat-free Friday against their religion?
Because meat-free Friday's would be just too damned Catholic.
LOL
Every real Beatles fan knows why John Lennon was shot....Yoko ducked!
I have a different strategy... I’m eating cows as fast as I can.
The more cows I consume, the fewer cows will be out there making greenhouse gasses.
I think he looks in pretty good shape for 79.
Didn't FDR have "meatless Mondays" during WWII? Paul McCartney wants to show that Joe Biden's not the only one capable of ripping off someone else's idea.
