06.15.09: Pittsburgh Officials Prepare for 350,000 fans at Penguins' Victory Parade
The City of Champions has gone Cup crazy. As Pittsburghers basked in the glow of a second pro sports championship in four months, the Stanley Cup toured PNC Park on Sunday, Sidney Crosby talked about the excitement of a two-title town and people crammed hotels in advance of today's celebration parade Downtown. "It's been an amazing couple of days," Penguins winger Bill Guerin said after throwing out the first pitch at yesterday's Pirates game. "This city is just crazy about it right now. It's awesome. Pittsburgh's such a huge sports town. The fans ... incredible. It's been wild." The Penguins' Stanley Cup victory parade starts at noon today and will take the same route the Steelers did in February after they won their sixth Super Bowl title. It will proceed through Grant Street, loop to the Boulevard of the Allies and end at Stanwix Street. Several Downtown streets will be closed. Pittsburgh officials are planning for the parade to draw as many as 350,000 people, the number who turned out for the Super Bowl victory parade, said Joanna Doven, a spokeswoman for Mayor Luke Ravenstahl.

Congratulations Pittsburgh Penguins
You Earned It!

"For over a thousand years Roman conquerors returning from the wars enjoyed the honor of triumph, a tumultuous parade. In the procession came trumpeteers, musicians and strange animals from conquered territories, together with carts laden with treasure and captured armaments. The conquerors rode in a trimphal chariot, the dazed prisoners walking in chains before him. Sometimes his children robed in white stood with him in the chariot or rode the trace horses. A slave stood behind the conqueror holding a golden crown and whispering in his ear a warning: that all glory is fleeting.” - General George S. Patton Jr.

I hope so.

I always thought it would be better to sign a deal for less money with a larger network (ESPN) to get more viewers.

But Versus certainly has grown since they signed with Bettman, so it was a good deal for them.

Funny here you complain about being accused of changing the subject, then you change the subject. We’re not talking about Crosby. We’re talking about whether or not Malkin attacks players at the end of a loss, an action that results in 10 minute game misconducts, a penalty Malkin has received 3 times in his 291 career games.

Mentioning Crosby is not changing the subject, as I did not go on and on about him. It's to show that I am not being partisan in "attacking" the Penguins, or lashing out because "my" team lost. Actually, I thought it was an innocuous statement about Malkin, but it does go to show what thin skins people have.

The matter isn’t that you think he’s immature.

To you, it's not the matter (hence my "shout"), but to me, it was why I said it!

All over the place you’re calling people juvenile and saying they can’t read. You’re pretty needlessly brutal.

And you think I'm the first to do that on FR? Obviously, the others were not "brutal" or juvenile", for calling me names. I see where you're coming from and what you are saying. Responding to several different posts at the same time can make some posts "seem" incomprehensible, and I really, really did take English Comp 1 and 2 (a long time ago . . . .), but you can only learn by doing.

I made a statement. I stayed on this thread and attempted to defend it instead of ducking off. The rhetoric got heated and so did I. I apologize to anyone if I offended them. It did not seem to me as if I was being understood.
I'm not a politician, (nor do I guess I would be a good one, I'm sure we'd all agree). I do like a spirited debate, though, and learn from each one I participate in. In the future I will attempt to keep to more reasoned arguments no matter how many names I get called.

FYI, the compilation of Pro Betting SCF Game 7 Odds was Win: Red Wings +1.85, which is a very strong + number. Some of the Detroit players crying on the bench after their defeat were not the only ones *lol*. IMO, the Penguins comeback season will be remembered as one of the great moments in NHL history. Pens were 50-1 Stanley Cup win odds when the playoffs started.

I didn't get home from work till around 10:00 pm Friday night. I was getting my briefcase and files, I brought home from the office, out of the trunk when GF opened the garage door and yelled, "hurry up and get in here, Pittsburgh is winning". I said "you kidding", and she said no it was 2-0 at the end of the second period. I could not believe it. I didn't think the Pens had a snowball's chance in hell of winning in Detroit. We sit down to watch the 3rd period, and I learn Crosby is hurt, and out of the game, and Talbot scored the two goals - wild. The 3rd period was like Game 6. Detroit was all over Pittsburgh. I'm happy for Malkin on winning the Conn Smythe, but IMO Pens would not have won the Stanley Cup without the brilliant goaltending Fleury showed in the playoffs when he had to make the big saves to deliver game wins.

I'm going to watch the DVRed Game 7 1st and 2nd period tonight along with the live internet recorded parade today. Great year to live in Pittsburgh!

Hey Airborne, re your posted photo of Alyonka Larionov and she was Malkins' GF. Did Alyonka dump her boytoy Alex Overchkin for Geno? Maybe that's why he hated Malkin so much in the Caps series - funny. Looks like good Game 7 ratings. ~ fla

Stan Savran reporting 375,000 fans attended the parade today!

The Penguins’ Stanley Cup triumph Friday was the most-watched NHL game since the early 1970s, according to NBC.

It gets better and better. Who would of thought the second week of February the Pens would be parading around Pittsburgh with the cup today.

I've watched game 7 probably 4 times now. It's an instant classic!

As for Larionov, Geno's parents were riding with him in the parade, along with a blonde with a long braided ponytail. Not sure if it was her or not.

Gentlemen...an instant ‘classic.’ What a game!!!

My two oldest, who work in opposite ends of ‘dahntahn’ were at the parade. BOTH said it was bigger than the Stillerz one back in February. Even the weather was perfect!!!

But this is the really sweet part...a nice little lady came into the establishment I work at this afternoon. She had to be 80ish...poofy white hair, a quad cane, and sporting A MALKIN REPLICA JERSEY (accompanied by darling little Guins emblem dangle earrings). Her first name is Olga, and she just loves Evgeni. We all just smiled. Her daughter, who is our customer, said her mom listens to Mike Lange religiously. What a doll though...just wanted to share that :)

The Pens won, get over it and stop focusing on Malkin.

I wasn't focusing on him -- you were. As to your other comments, I haven't looked at them and I really don't give a damn about them. I haven't even looked at the rest of the thread and don't really care to. I commented on one and only one thing that stoped me in my tracks when I read it. -- your comment in post #6.

I'm not sure Malkin even belongs in the NHL.
6 posted on Monday, June 15, 2009 12:21:36 PM by jeffc (They're coming to take me away! Ha-ha, hey-hey, ho-ho!)

Malkin had the most points in the regular season and the most points in the playoffs. In three years in the league, he is averaging over 100 points per season and he's only 22 years old and still has a lot to learn. He's just getting started.

Now if you really think he does not belong in the NHL, all I can say is they really should come and take you away. That is about the dumbest thing I have heard anyone say -- even for the sour grapes types. (They usually blame the refs.)

Now you can just keep rattling on and digging a deeper hole, or just admit that was a pretty damn stupid thing to say in the heat of the moment.

I think the Wings are a team of the ages, but they just blew it for whatever reason in Game 7. That does not mean their opponents are somehow undeserving. The Pens are one hell of a team and young on top of that. I would not be surprised to see another Wings - Pens match-up in next years finals. They are each the best of their conferences from what I can see.

Whatever --- it was a hell of a series, and in fact, the entire NHL playoffs this year were the most competitive and exciting that I can recall.

Just great, exciting hockey all the way through. I loved it.

You and the others hitting on me for my Malkin statement can keep on digging your own hole, as your own posts prove it: Nowhere did I say Malkin does not belong in the NHL, but that is what I stand accused of. I said, as you yourself posted (!) "I'm not sure Malkin even belongs in the NHL".
That is way different than saying flat-out that Malkin does not belong. And for the record, I'm still not convinced, but may change my mind after I see how he plays and acts next year.

You dug your own hole with this comment:

ME: Do you really think it comes close to anything BO has said, either while campaigning or in office for absurdity?

You: Yea, I do

Now, what you said is absurd, unless, of course, you're an Obam supporter.
You're the one who left it wide open for comparison to BO's statements, and what happens? I get accused of "changing the subject"!

So someone isn't sure about Malkin's maturity to play in the NHL. I'm sure there have been plenty of others who played in the NHL who weren't ready to. Why get so hung up on one player, as you have seemed to have done? and yes, you did focus on him. I only mentioned it in passing, and went on to say, hey! the Pens won, congrats, and the Wings (my team) had a lousy excuse for losing. I didn't say anything bad about the Pens team itself. I don't think much of Talbot the goalie spearer, or Orpik, but I won't call them "bad" players, either, same as I did for Malkin.

I also agree with you that it was a heck of a series, the best of the playoffs (as it should be - the two best teams).

I also agree with you that he's young and just getting started. He will be, in all probability, more mature next year, and even a better player.
Funny also, how you and others did not complain about some calling Crosby "Cindy" Crosby, which I would not do. I think Sid handled himself well, and I would like to compare (or contrast) the behavior of Crosby with Malkin, but I'll be accused of "changing the subject".

Oh, and don't yell. Razorboy will tell you it's juvenile.

I agree (again) that the Wings blew it. not that they lost the series, but that the Pens beat them - fair and square. The Wings could have won, but played listlessly in game 7. Still the Pens had to beat them, and they did. In other words, like you say, the Pens are not undeserving - the Wings are still a very formidable team, even when "out of gas", but the Pens beat them - no two ways about it.

I still do not understand why you feel so vehemently about it being a "dumbest" statement, instead of saying something like, "hey, that's dumb, I don't agree, but you're entitled to think the way you want".
I fully believe you are entitled to your beliefs, and only referenced you on the BO thing, not that you think Malkin is more deserving than I think he is.

And why not? They played damn fine in last year's Final. I fully expected a rematch this year. Didn't go as I expected it would, but so what? It was great series, and I loved it. I hope it happens again next year!

If you check out the slide show link I posted at # 93, look for Malkin and his parents riding in the bed of a pick up. Then look at the blonde riding with them. I think it’s Alyonka Larionov riding with them!

While I do admit he might be a little young to captain a team (I myself would want someone who has more "been there and done it" experience) - hey! They chose him! (says alot about "democracy" as compared to a "republic", huh?)

Crosby is too young, lacks experience, and lacks wisdom, that's why I laugh at them for making him the captain. I'll bet you that it wasn't much of an election, but rather Mario probably "suggested" that they pick him. Who would I have picked? Not sure... maybe Gill, Talbot, or Orpik.
I had no dog in this hunt, as my team wasted a great season by sucking in the first round.
Who was the better team? The Red Wings. Who should have won the Conn Smythe, even in a losing effort? Chris Osgood.
Given the way the game was officiated (or lack of), the Ducks would have beaten the Penguins, since they have more goons.

I am a Steelers fan, as far as hockey it’s the St. Louis Blues. But Pennsylvania now has 3 of the 4 major team sport champions with the Steelers, Penguins, and Phillies.

The Steelers and the Penguins may draw similar crowds in Pittsburgh, outside of Pittsburgh the Steelers have a national following.

Funny how you’ve completely fled from the facts and your original statement. Let’s get back to that.

You say Malkin displays too much thug like behavior. The stats say he’s got 3 game misconducts in his 291 game career (one of which was gotten in that conflict with Zetterberg at the end of game two), no fighting majors, and actually makes it through more than half his games with no penalties at all. Where is all this immature behavior you say should be keeping him out of the league?

Bingo that's her. In the videos you can see Alyonka when the truck goes by the cameras. A reporter tried to get a quick interview with Malkin -- like they did with other players-- but he refused. Alyonka must have decided to trade up to a CHAMP. Nice collection of photos.
