Police were called early Sunday to the home Manuel Salvador Morales Jr. shared with his parents because relatives said Morales was threatening himself with knives. Police spokesman Tom Nichols says two officers confronted Morales, who was armed and failed to comply with their commands. No additional details about the confrontation or how Morales was armed were released.
Nichols says Officer Albert Riccardi fired two shots at Morales, who was hit twice in the torso and pronounced dead at a hospital.

There is almost no situation that can’t be made worse by adding cops.
As I recall, many Police depts are allowed to use deadly force if the person armed with a knife lunges at them. I read somewhere that deadly force can be used if the armed man is within 20 feet of the officers, as a fast man can cover that distance rather quickly.
You cannot commit suicide (without the aid of a chemical suicide machine) but if you try, it carries a violent death sentence.
Of course!
My point is that surely the dept would have made it clear if the guy actually did lunge at the officers.
They did not.
You may choose to be a statist slave to the police and their bosses if you want. I don't. I still believe in that silly idea that the people in this country are sovereign and that public employees, including the police, work FOR the people.
This was murder. It wasn’t premedated and it may be within the powers of their job, but the man was killed by another man. It may not have even been self-defense (unless he was in close proximity and moving to attack them).
I recall a case in Texas where a man shot two home intruders who’d just looted his neighbor’s house and was coming to his property. An officer was even already on the scene (but the 911 dispatch did not tell the caller this) but the officer did not act, he only observed from a distance because he was awaiting backup.
The man was charged with the murder of these two men but not convicted.
I don’t think the dept would be releasing any clarifying information in an initial report, which makes this whole discussion a bit premature.
Again, if someone has more information, please share it. If not, I propose waiting for some before calling the cops murderers like another poster.
If that was the case the cops should have retreated and called in somebody who knew what they were doing. If the guy was holding a hostage and it would be a different story...the only hostage was himself.
Your ignorance is noteworthy. Where is there evidence these officers did not know what they are doing?
Do you understand the article was approx 10 sentences long with absolutely no specifics? Please stop with your ASSumptions that the officers are at fault, it is premature and ridiculous.
You choose to be an anarchist. Jump on your soap box and make up whatever lies you want believing you are the only one not fooled. You are no better than the new York Times, and those you choose to denigrate and rail against.
Enjoy the kool-aid.
Seems he would have had a better chance of survival, if they had just let him cut himself up...
The DEAD guy in his bed!!! Sheesh stop being such a sheeple!
schizophrenia + drinking + suicide threat = trouble
Then why is the officer on administrative leave????
Fixed that! He won’t hurt himself now...
Clever little post. If you don't have the guts to call me an ASS don't play games with you shft key.
You made the premature and ridiculous assumption ( see how it's supposed to look?) that this was suicide by cop.
Oh my God, so now cops can’t shoot people.
I am generally disgusted with your comments and don’t appreciate being called sheeple.
I am so glad you were an eyewitness to this event. Would you please call the dept and report your account, because I am sure they want to hear from you.
I see you’re from Arizona...now I know how McCain manages to get reelected every 6 years.
