If they are convinced that those protesting are protesting against Allah instead of the government, they might be more than happy to hunt everyone of the protesters down and kill them. Automatic weapons, when used properly can be an incredible crowd deterrent...
The question would be whether religious zealotry is that prevalent in the Iranian Army. I’m not sure it is.
