Unless they can get at least the same number of protesters out for this that they had during the early days of the 1979 hostage crisis, the government will kill as many as it takes to quash this uprising. I predict another Tienanmen Square style military act.

Do we know what politics are like inside the Iranian military, though? One thing the Chinese had to do in order for Tiananmen to happen was pull out the units that are usually based around Beijing and instead use units from more rural areas, because they were concerned that soldiers drawn from urban areas would be too sympathetic to the students. The military is young, and drawn from the same population that's producing the rioters. Are they willing to kill as many of their countrymen as it takes? The Revolutionary Guard, maybe, but I doubt there are enough of them.
