ST. GEORGE'S, BERMUDA - It was time for a Uighur walkabout.
After days of relaxing, the four released Guantanamo Bay detainees stepped into the Bermuda sunshine Sunday and started getting to know the locals.
The Muslims from China spent their fourth day of freedom walking around historic St. George's with their two minders and a translator.
There was no chance of going unnoticed.
"We wish you all the best," shouted one passerby, giving them the thumbs up.
The new arrivals walked around the main square and checked out the sailing boats floating on turquoise waters.
"I imagined turbans, they look like normal people," said Kaiwan Trott, 25. "I ain't got any problem with them - as long as they don't try anything fishy."
The group, who spent seven years imprisoned at the notorious U.S. detention center, were greeted like celebrities on an island that is no stranger to well-known faces.
Michael Douglas, David Bowie and Mayor Bloomberg all have homes here.
Some people were eager to shake their hands and take a souvenir photo of the four Uighurs who are ethnic Turk Muslims from China.
Others gazed quizzically from a distance at the men who have made international headlines and caused intense political upheaval.
"It's kind of amazing to see them," said Gail Robinson, 48, who brought her car to a halt as they walked by. "It's a tiny bit scary because really you don't know their backgrounds."
"They've got to live somewhere," said another woman, shooting piercing looks in their direction as she sat on a bench eating ice cream. "I think they will be able to settle in."
The four bearded men - Salahidin Abdulahad, Ablikin Turahun, Abdulla Abdulqadir and Helil Mamut - are being looked after by two former Bermudian military men.
Their translator, Rushan Abbas, will stay at least until Sunday at the men's request.
She cooked them their first Uighur meal since being released Saturday night and they bought her a cake to celebrate her birthday Sunday.
"They don't want me to leave," she said. "But the sooner I go, the sooner they'll start speaking English."

Does it actually say "Obama"?
...Talk about a picture being worth a thousand words........
I would be curious to know how much ‘traveling’ money and ‘living expense’ funding and ‘settlement’ cash they will be getting via the US taxpayers.
Poor things. They look like they just got out of a death camp, looking all skinny and that. I wonder how long it will be before the Bermuda people build them their very own mosque?
In fifty years the muzzies will rule Bermuda!!!
Obama and the Dems should be sweating balls. If one of these guys pulls something violent after getting the ClubMed treatment at taxpayer expense, Zero’s goose is cooked 5,000 Newsweek/Time/People covers be damned.
