Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has defended his "completely free" re-election as Iran's president, amid violent clashes on the streets over claims of election fraud.

Mr Ahmadinejad condemned the outside world for "psychological warfare" against Iranians during the election.

Thousands have protested against the result, burning barricades on the streets of Tehran and clashing with police, who responded with tear gas.

Reformist candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi urged his supporters to avoid violence.

Mr Ahmadinejad is due to hold a news conference on Sunday, followed by a huge victory rally.

'Down with the dictator'

Speaking on national television, Mr Ahmadinejad praised the Iranian people for choosing to "look toward the future" rather than returning to the past.

"This is a great victory at a time and condition when the whole material, political and propaganda facilities outside of Iran and sometimes... inside Iran, were total mobilised against our people," he said.

He blamed "foreign media" for instigating a "full-fledged fight against our people".

"Nearly 40 million people took part in a totally free election," he said.

BBC Iranian affairs analyst Sadeq Saba says the margin of the win was so wide that it made a lot of people suspicious.

When I think of their mullahs, I also think of our czars.

IMO, if things get bad enough, this kind of thing could easily happen here.

It should have already happened here. I don’t mean the violent parts, but the numbers, all in one place(DC) at the same time. When the GM/ Chrysler stuff started and they stole the dealers businesses and gave them to whoever they wanted, that should have been the final straw. I actually think they can do anything they want and Americans will just whine. The only thing they might rebel against is a gun grab or the Kenyan trying to stay in the WH forever. Not sure they even have the stomach to take the time away from American Idol for that. Even here on FR the American Idol number of posts is mind boggling.

Some fools just need killing.
Hopefully some Iranian patriot sends this murderer to hell.

It will be very interesting if the numbers can continue to grow for the protest, and in many population centers. I am waiting to hear reports of key mullahs starting to deport to South America and other sanctuaries.
If we hear things along that line then perhaps major change could occur in Iran.
If the gov. goes the martial law route which it probably will, and starts killing a lot of people and scaring them back into their holes, then this is a temporary set back at most for the mullah and the government.
Surely we need to see hundreds of thousands of violent protesters refusing for weeks on end to continue 24 hour protests as the videos display.
But I say nothing we all are not aware of.
