LA Times: Europeans balk at taking Guantanamo inmates

London -- If you won't take them, why should we?

That question has ricocheted across Europe as the Obama administration tries to fulfill its promise to shut down the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Though Europeans laud that goal, many countries in the region remain skeptical about taking in former inmates, especially as the United States appears increasingly unwilling to allow any within its borders.

Comments by German Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble illustrate just what a hard sell it is for Washington.

"If none of the U.S. states are ready to take in Guantanamo inmates, then you will have to explain to the European public why the rules for Europe should be different from those in the U.S.," Schaeuble said last week.

Also under discussion is whether Washington will contribute toward the cost of resettling the former inmates.

Alcatraz is still a very useful alternative spot. That it's in Pelosiland makes it sweeter.

Guess the check hasn't cleared yet.

I hope someone asks Gibbs how much the US is paying in bribes to get these psychos repatriated.

How long would they stay in Africa? Once you lose control of them, you lose control. Leave them where they are.

Duh.

FWIW, I don’t consider that a solution. I’d leave ‘em on Gitmo ‘til they rot. But I think that bribing nations to take them is what Barry’s up to. And he oughta be called on it.

true but will not happen. but from my european point of view better in Africa than here ;-) (i guess you will have similar feelings about the US). at least it makes it harder for them to get back.

what else should he do? (if you close Gitmo) why should any sane country take this guys? you have to bribe a country for doing this. lets hope no european country is stupid enought to take only one single inmate because of the open borders they would be free to travel around europe no matter which country was dumb enought to let em in

0bama is an expletive depleted. He creates his own rules and doesn’t follow protocol.

But then when did a caliph ever follow protocol?
