VA 2009: McAuliffe defeat another blow to Clinton legacy [failure]

NEW YORK (AP) — Terry McAuliffe's crushing defeat in Virginia's gubernatorial primary is the latest blow to former President Bill Clinton's political legacy, still reeling from Hillary Rodham Clinton's loss to Barack Obama in last year's Democratic presidential contest.

McAuliffe, a longtime fundraiser and close friend of both Clintons, brought money and attention to an off-year election that otherwise would have commanded little notice outside Virginia. Bill Clinton appeared at five rallies across the state for McAuliffe, lent his voice to radio commercials and recorded telephone endorsements to help get out the vote. Clinton also attended a fundraiser at McAuliffe's northern Virginia home.

McAuliffe raised about $7 million for the campaign, nearly double what primary winner Creigh Deeds brought in, and led state polls throughout much of the race even though he was a first-time candidate and newcomer to Virginia politics. But Deeds still won decisively, also beating former state delegate Brian Moran, and will face Republican Bob McDonnell in the fall.

The sheer scope of Deeds' victory — he won nearly 50 percent of the primary vote and carried 10 of the state's 11 Congressional districts — made one thing breathtakingly clear: The Clinton star power doesn't necessarily translate into votes.

You know it’s bad when even the MSM acknowledges their failure.

This is the best news I've had this week! McAuliffe is and will always be a scumbag - I feel like I need to take a shower if I stumble across him on TV or the radio. Glad to see that there is till some sense in the Virginia electorate.

In addition to being a scumbag, he’s NOT A VIRGINIAN!

I think this article is a very obvious attempt to make this about CLINTON than about liberal democrats--ala Obama.

Remember when the press LOVED Clinton? Now he's old news, so they're using him to take heat away from their current love. And they'll toss Obama under the bus one day, too.

I saw clips of one of the rallies Bill Clinton led and it was noteworthy that the crowd was about a 100 people. Virginia is about 20 percent black, 7 percent higher than the national African American population, which at one time was wild for Clinton. I agree with DarkWolf. The news media will suppress the Clinton's as long as they represent a potential challenge to Obama.

As Rush always said when Clinton shows up the candidate he supports always loses.

That can't happen too soon for me. Today would be good. Yesterday even better.

I remember during the late 90s, Bill Clinton was declared the first black president. Blacks would make all kinds of excuses for the Clintons. Now that blacks have Obama, Clinton is old news. In fact, if you were to call Bill Clinton as the first black president, it would be considered a racist remark.

Oh my. How far Terry McAuliff's star has fallen. The fair haired attack poodle of the Clinton Crime Family (TM) is now Fredo's pool boy in Vegas ...

When Louis Farrakhan was interviewed a few years ago he was asked why Clinton was considered the first black president.
Farrakhan said it wasn't because Clinton had done anything for blacks. He signed welfare reform which cut a lot of entitlements. Farrakhan said blacks felt a kinship to Clinton based on Clinton's unending legal troubles—corruption.

What was totally hilarious was John Kerry's statement during the 2004 campaign that he “would not object to being considered the second black president.” Some female, African-American journalist ripped him up citing his life of privilege and social elitism.
