WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Federal Reserve threatened to force the ouster of Bank of America CEO Kenneth Lewis if he didn't follow through with plans to buy Merrill Lynch & Co., Republicans said Wednesday after reviewing internal documents.
Republicans also said there was evidence that the government tried to restrict information related to the merger from being publicly released.
However, none of the documents showed that the government explicitly instructed Bank of America to hide Merrill Lynch's losses from shareholders, they said.

And the man in the Office of President-Elect was Obama. Who had more power, the lame duck or the power mad Chicago thug?
“And now people are surprised at what they got? The CEO probably voted for and raised money for ZERO.”
Ann Coulter has pointed this out many times. Wall Street was one of the biggest contributors to the zerobama campaign.
Another example:
Crain’s New York recently had an article about a $5,000 per table tribute to the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Barney Frank. One of “Fwank’s” biggest admirers and lobbyists is Rick Lazio, a former GOP congressman and a J.P. Morgan executive (I believe he ran for senator of NY against Hitlery when Giuliani was diagnosed with cancer).
So there you have it. Mainstream GOP support Fwank, who desires the power to set salaries and wages for private businesses, even those that never took a dime of bailout money. According to the Crain’s article, another lobbyist calls Fwank “a pro-capitalist liberal”, i.e., a typical fascist (”fascism” being that form of socialism in which private individuals retain nominal title to ownership of property but have none of the rights of actual ownership — they produce what the state tells them to produce, set prices however the state dictates, set wages according to state diktat, etc.).
Just as the left hoodwinked people into voting for them by usurping the classical term “liberal”, so too do they lie to people now by calling themselves and their socialist agenda “pro-capitalist.”
Democrats? No. The pressuring came from Bernanke at the Fed and Paulson at the Treasury. In other words, Bush’s folks.
But HEY, didn't an old couple drive around with a cell recorder?
No question, GWB, and his treasury secretary conducted himself like a power mad thug.
Perhaps, but the "hoods" who did this are no longer in the White House or at Treasury.
Yes, but never let facts intrude on an Obama bashing thread.
I don't know what they thought, but GWB is from Texas, not Chicago. He did contribute to Obama, though but this treatment by the Bush administration wouldn't have been an issue, coming later.
