It looks like the Obama administration has finally found a home for the 17 Uighurs detained at Gitmo. According to the Associated Press, the small Pacific Island of Palau is reportedly taking all 17 Uighurs in exchange for $200 million. If true, this raises a few obvious observations and questions.
First, it says much about how poorly the effort to close Gitmo is going that no nation, other than an island resort nation that is heavily dependent on aid from the U.S., is willing to take the Uighurs. The Obama administration considered the Uighurs the easiest bunch of detainees to relocate. But Canada, European nations, and others have rejected the Obama administrations various proposals to take them. If the Uighurs cannot be easily relocated, what will come of other detainees that the Obama administration does not want to try or detain?
Second, $200 million is a steep price. At that rate, the Obama administration is willing to pay almost $12 million per Uighur. How much will the Obama administration pay to nations in exchange taking other detainees, who may be more worrisome? Is $12 million the going rate? Will the Obama administration pay more to nations that are willing to take detainees with even more troubling terrorist dossiers?
Take no more prisoners ...
Isn’t this sorta like selling slaves????
damn, for $200 million they can come live with me....
*shrug* I think 0bama comes from a long line of slavers...
Not his money. Why should he care?
They can stay with me for $119 million and I will throw in free computers........Oh, maybe they can take those they got recently with them!
The Uighur Sanction
I wonder how much Denmark would charge to relocate them all to mid Greenland?
Heck, we’ll even throw in some ‘gently used’ FEMA trailers...
Good one!
It would cost about 85 cents each under my plan.
I keep thinking that the day is over and then they do something else.

Really... could make them disappear, then hire some darned good lawyers to get me off the hook.
It’s insanity. He acts like 200m is NOTHING. This is just all for show.
I went to Palau in the late nineties on vacation. It is one of the most amazingly beautiful places on Earth. If I was Bill Gates I would try to buy the place.
One of the tourist things to do is to go the jail in Koror and buy wood carvings done by the prisoners. It is a Mayberry operation where the jail cells aren't even locked.
‘Isnt this sorta like selling slaves????’
Zero just set the new ransom standard for any American that is abducted by a hostile nation. If we’re willing to pay $12 million each to get rid of a few undesirables, then surely we’d pay that much to reclaim folks that we actually care about, right? Nobama is a disgrace. He has nothing to do with America. Our nation is being run by a con artist.
They built a new capitol. Its a replica of the U.S. capitol building.

They don't.
These Uighurs were deemed to be enemy combatants. What that means is, they went through the CSRT's had their cases adjudicated and were found to be enemy combatants. That's a way of saying, they fought against US troops. Good luck Palau!
They didn't have much choice. U.S. aid just about runs the place.

I promise ya, China will pay us for them.
