June 9 (Bloomberg) -- Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said President Barack Obamas plan to fix the economy through stimulus spending and government intervention to boost companies like General Motors Corp. has "already failed."
Gingrich was the keynote speaker at a fundraising dinner for the Republican House and Senate campaign committees, filling a role President George W. Bush had served for the past eight years.
"Bureaucrats managing companies does not work, politicians dominating the economy does not work," Gingrich told about 2,000 Republicans who attended the event at the Washington Convention Center last night.
Some Republican leaders hailed Gingrich, the leader of the 1994 "Republican Revolution," as a de facto head of the party at a time when Republicans are looking for ideas to lead them back to the majority.
In introducing Gingrich, Representative Paul Ryan of Wisconsin called him the architect of the last reform movement and the man of ideas.
Gingrich was preceded by a series of Republican leaders who also took aim at Democrats and the government bailout of Detroit-based GM, New York-based American International Group Inc. and other companies.

Nonsense, Newt! From beyond The Beyond, Karl Marx, Leon Trotsky, and Nikolai Lenin all agree this fellow’s a marvelous success.
Newt gave a good speech last night, no doubt. But, when push comes to shove, Newt is unstable. His political winds get too lofty for me.
I’m starting a pool for how long it will be before he retracts his statement.
Keep on begging FRiend for those of substance like Dick Cheney will be proved to be worthy of respect via legacy.
Those who do are, those who just talk aren't.
I am not saying I agree with what he says but, IMHO, at his best (and when he has his telemprompter) he can give a well-delivered speech IMHO. In any case, with both Newt or Obama, I don’t really care about “words, words, words.” The important thing is action and, in this respect, Newt has failed repeatedly, most recently by pushing the greatest leap to socialism in decades: TARP. He is hopeless. It is all a game with him.
Again, what evidence do you have that he ever spoke out (as he did for Scooter) for TARP while veep?
That’s “against TARP.”
The microphone is important.
Newt loves Newt. That part will never change.
And not just a wuss- he earned a reputation for betraying his allies.
And his First and Second wives.
The content of Obama’s speeches is invariably not the least bit awesome. Much of the content of Newt’s speech was awesome.
Those who did not hear it are being manipulated by the MSM, which has cleverly picked out a few soundbites with the expressed intent of infuriating the base. All the great things he said are going unreported.
Newt gives great speeches. Even Christina Jeffrey, whom Newt betrayed in a most cowardly fashion, still praises Newt’s oratory.
“I do like Newt”
Me neither. He’s a opportunistic, toad. Reminds me of Gollum.
Next election — “It’s the economy, stupid!”... :-)
Again, it is somewhat beside the point as to whether Newt or Obama gives a well-delivered speech. You still haven’t addressed the crux of the matter: do Newt’s words translate into action?
