Envy is usually camouflaged as something more socially acceptable, in this case as wanting "acceptance". No, they couldn't care less what other people think. They envy what other people have. To the degree they are denied, they want it more, which is why being in the military, marriage, and children are at the top of their list. Many do not really want these things. They are just consumed by envy for having been denied.
