Globe Guild rejects contract proposal, 277-265
Boston Herald ^ | 6/8/09 | Jessica Heslam and Christine McConville

The Boston Globe’s biggest union last night refused to bow to contract concessions demanded by its New York corporate masters in a high-risk slap that dares management to make good on threats to impose a 23-percent pay cut or even shutter the struggling broadsheet.

It was a close vote but the Boston Newspaper Guild rejected the company’s contract proposal by a vote of 277-265.

Guild members dared management to impose a draconian 23 percent pay cut rather than accepting the company’s 8.4 percent salary cut and drastically reduced benefits.

stupid unions.

however, just like the US, 100% of these union members are going to suffer due to the ignorance of 52%

I stand in solidarity with the Boston Globe unions. The greedy NY Times management are trying to bleed the unions.

I only wish I were in boston to stand on the picket line with them! (LOL!)

By the way - where is Sean Penn, Matt Damon and other Hollywood “stars” to back these brave union members?

In this case they are probably making the right move.

Newspapers are no more savable than ice houses or livery stables were in their day.

If they stay on at a reduced rate they will just be dying slowly and I submit there are much better than even odds that part of upcoming negotiations would include getting employee pension funds to “Invest in the company” to produce operating revenue. That often repeated refrain has lead to pensions that are drained and gone in other obsolescent industries when the doors finally close

Not that I mind the Idea of destitute, homeless former “journalists”.

Real professionals don’t turn their personal livelihood over to a bunch of union lackeys from downtown.

the unions have bled TNYT for years! I’m not friends of either; but some union workers couldn’t keep a job on the outside.

Fact: The Globe is bleeding the New York Times of $85 million a year, clearly its biggest blackhole.

Fact: This is not the pressmen’s or driver’s union, they all already voted the concessions. This is the reporters and editors union. These guys are next to unemployable in this environment. The Times was asking for a measly 8%, they may wind up out of work completely.

Proves what I suspected all along...the Globe Editors and writers are not the brightest bulbs on the tree.

Here in Wichita when Boeing became spirit the unions voted down the new contract since spirit said it probably not buy Boeing if the contract was voted down. Well Spirit did buy them and began cutting people out on strike and the new contract was less. Although the one after that they all got a big bonus and all the ones who voted it down the first time are still out of a job.

Yes but those “journalists” aka propagandists have lifetime employment. It is written into their union contract.

The NY Times management and Pinch Sulzburger are just being greedy.
