Ravenstahl wins Republican slot on November ballot.

"The Republican nominee for Pittsburgh's top office is its Democratic mayor.

Mayor Luke Ravenstahl's campaign confirmed today that he will accept the GOP nod for mayor, after the Allegheny County Elections Division released its official count of Republican write-in votes in last month's primary. Mr. Ravenstahl, a lifelong Democrat, got 607, versus 189 for Squirrel Hill Republican John Wander, who ran a last-minute write-in nomination bid."

How did he get on the ballot? Did he switch parties?

No. He got more Republican write-in votes than the one Republican in the primary. Otherwise, there just isn’t anyone who was going to run against him.

I think the local GOP just rolled over on this one.

This is PATHETIC: How did the GOP allow this to happen..Can the State GOP do something about this..?

Also (I am not a Pennsylvanian, but this seems almost like ‘cheating’ to me). Is this something to do with your state’s “open primaries” law..?

You’d have to ask someone more versed in the electio laws than me, but this says he got more Republican write-in votes than the one Republican running in the primary. So, Republicans had to have voted for Ravenstahl.

I heard this in passing on the local news and thought ‘what?!’, so I looked for the story. I still don’t know how Ravenstahl gets a majority of ‘Republican’ write-in votes. Unless they were as Republican as Arlen Specter.

I’d expect Ravenstahl to beat a Republican foe anyway with Pittsburgh being what it is. But there wasn’t even an effort here. They voted Democrat.

Pennsylvania doesn’t have “open primaries.”
