On June 8, 1967, US Navy intelligence ship USS Liberty was suddenly and brutally attacked on the high seas in international waters by the air and naval forces of Israel. The Israeli forces attacked with full knowledge that this was an American ship and lied about it. Survivors have been forbidden for 40 years to tell their story under oath to the American public. The USS Liberty Memorial web site tells their story and is dedicated to the memory of the 34 brave men who died.

The subject has been thoroughly discussed in the past here at Free Republic. I did not want the anniversary to pass without acknowlegement.

Suppose on June 8, 1967 your dad accidently backed his car out of the garage and killed your little brother on his tricycle.

Would you be just as interested in not letting the anniversary pass without acknowlegement?

Yes, it’s often been discussed on FR.

I think that probably Israel did attack the Liberty knowing that it was an American ship. And I think the reason they attacked it was because Lyndon B. Johnson was using the Liberty to help provide information to Israel’s enemies in that war.

I don’t fault the Captain and the crew of the Liberty for that. They were following orders and doing their job. But I do fault LBJ, who may have been Israel’s worst enemy in the White House until Obama came along. Worse than Jimmy Carter, if that’s possible.

Just my opinion. We don’t know what happened for sure.

Similarly, I don’t fault the U.S. military who fought in the war against Yugoslavia, but I do fault clinton, for fighting that war on the wrong side, against our national interests.

“Suppose on June 8, 1967 your dad accidently backed his car out of the garage and killed your little brother on his tricycle. Would you be just as interested in not letting the anniversary pass without acknowlegement?”

That’s a good analogy.

The NSA raw intelligence which proves conclusively that the Israelis did not know it was a US ship has long since been declassified and made public. Yet the contrary is still asserted. The conspiracy theorists claim it’s all an elaborate coverup by the US government to save Israel from the consequences of a premeditated attack on a US ship. People who hate Israel need no real evidence to support their conspiracy theories.

You forgot to mention that they machine-gunned a bunch of American sailors in life-boats.

And that the only recorded occaision that a Congressional Medal of Honor has EVER been awarded in secret —EVER— was following this ambush....

I read somewhere that the Jews were behind this attack.

Could be. The way I had read it, the stories from both sides actually there sounded like they were struggling to avoid hide their own incompetence. The sort of story “they had to have seen the flag” weak stuff. But the more I read, it is possible we were feeding the Egyptians.

From the front page of the site linked for your post:
"For detailed and authoritative accounts of the power and influence of the pro-Israel lobby, please see The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy by Mearsheimer and Walt..."

LOL--straight from the Benito wing of the Democrats.

I probably should have added that I don’t think the Liberty was feeding information to Egypt. They were gathering information and feeding it back to the U.S.

So if the information was then passed on to the other side, that would have been on LBJ’s orders. In other words, if that’s what happened—and it’s not really certain—then the ship was put into an untenable position by their Commander in Chief.

Which is essentially also what LBJ did in Vietnam—putting troops into harm’s way while he micro-mis-managed the war. And they would have won it anyway, given the chance.

Well no matter how the flame war breaks out I just want to say that Captain William L. McGonagle was one heck of a sailor to get his ship back to port despite the massive damage done to her. Had she sunk many of the 177 wounded men aboard would also have been lost.

Wow and to think you didn’t even have an account on here during the Last Anniversary so you obviously couldn’t have shared your views then.

Strange how Isreal is always the boogeyman to some.

President Johnson declared us neutral in the 6 Day War.Israel warned all ships to stay away from the area in conflict. It is very possible the Johnson administration was supplying the Egyptians.I really do not think the Israelis would attack one of are ships. However in war,s*** does happen.I feel bad for the sailors that day.God Bless them.

Met the CO in the O-Club in Newport RI when I was in OCS in 1968. Noticed the Medal of Honor ribbon and rendered propoer honers - a salute. He told me he wore it for the crew as they earned it. He was a fine, fine man!
