Why do we keep losing our cities?

The answer is simple. The limousine liberals impose their socialist agenda in the city such as rent control, public housing and welfare programs and then they flee to the inner suburbs where they surround themselves with gated communities, Whole Foods supermarkets and Starbucks outlets, all the while ensuring that section 8 housing, prisons and check cashing outlets never get built in their neighborhood.

Meanwhile, the conservatives get the hell away from everybody so they move out to the exurbs where they surround themselves with acres of forest, Outback restaurants and big-box stores where they can buy everything they need without having to go near the city.

You know I remember in the early 1970’s when articles appeared everywhere condemning the people for fleeing from Milwaukee the newspapers all had huge headlines “White Flight” and said how horrible and racist the people were for leaving. Now over 30 years later they are still wondering why the cities are such cess pools? Same old, same old doing the same things over and over and expecting different results...Insanity Reigns in those cities. St. Paul used to be a nice city not anymore! They just kept welcoming the trash and now the city is trash.

You forgot all-you-can-eat restaurants to get fat in, but those are more of a class thing (lower/lower middle class blacks and Hispanics love those places as well).

It amazes me how similar exurban whites are to lower-middle class minorities in terms of certain areas of cultural tastes (chain restaurants, big portions of food, big trucks, big box stores, obsession with sports, church, etc.). Where I live in Queens, the only people you see at the local Applebees and Uno restaurants are hispanics, middle easterners, and blacks, even though it is still largely a white area (local whites preferring independent places).

Houston is not living up to your model. Our inner city neighborhoods are being rebuilt with huge 10,000+ square foot homes and 3 story luxury townhomes. The richer you are the closer to the center of town you can afford to live and a lot of those people do vote liberal. There are formerly nice middle class (50’s and 60’s) suburban neighborhoods that are dangerous places now filled with crime.
Some people have moved very far out into the country but unless you are retired you have to face horrible traffic to get back into the city to work.

We live pretty close in, in a 50+ year old neighborhood that has held together quite well. By that I mean most of the homes are original and have been refurbished, only a couple have been torn down and new ones built on the lots.
