Laura explains Bush 'silence' Defends Cheney
Politico ^ | 6/08.09 | By CAROL E. LEE

Former first lady Laura Bush said while her husband, George W. Bush, does not think it’s appropriate for a former president to criticize his successor, she understands why former Vice President Dick Cheney has.

“That’s his right as a citizen of the U.S., and I think he also feels obligated and so I understand why he wants to speak out,” Bush said in an interview with ABC’s “Good Morning America.” “On the other hand George feels like as a former president that he owes President Obama his silence on issues and that there’s no reason to second guess any decisions he makes.”

The former first lady also approves of Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Sonia Sotomayor, saying “she sounds like a very interesting and good nominee.”

“As a woman I’m proud that there might be another woman on the court,” Bush said. “So we’ll see what happens, but I wish her well.”

Asked about the infighting within the Republican Party, Bush said while she and former President Bush “talk about it a lot,” it’s “probably not that bad.”

“I think it’s just a very typical political cycle,” she said of the GOP’s shrinking status. “It’s like creative tension within a party for people to talk about what it is they – how they want to be represented

Why should she stay mum? Last I checked, the First Amendment still applied to all Americans equally. I also don't recall any constitutional phrase that limits free speech only to those who are in lock-step agreement with LowOil.

The former first lady also approves of Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Sonia Sotomayor, saying “she sounds like a very interesting and good nominee.”

Your right, it is her right to open mouth and utter what she said. It is your right to respond to my response on it. I will go restate my opinion on it again for your convenience, "Please Laura, keep mum on such subjects in the future."

Laura here highly disappoints this Freeper and I reserve the right to gripe about it whether you approve of it or not. Classy lady that she is, I tend to call them as I see them as they occur.

This is the current legacy of President George W. Bush: click here ... Before him office the party was unified, he left it in a heap! I suppose, though, you'll always be proud of him. As I stated before, he is the embodiment of Nicholas II of Russia, Charles I of England and Louis XVI of France. All were considered good, Christian men and jolly old fellows--someone you'd probably like to have a beer with, just like old Jorge. What happened are facts of history--they were all followed by the most radical regimes imaginable. The same is true of Bush!

This picture is so telling. Cheney KNOWS the mistake this country has made with the election of Obama. He KNOWS what is at stake, what will be lost, what will be compromised, and how the country will suffer.

I am so glad he is speaking out. There is too much at stake to be silent on the issues. I understand George Bush's gentlemanly view that the incoming president deserves a chance. His father did the same with Clinton...even through the scandals. That is honorable, but the Democrats don't play by the same rules.

I will go restate my opinion on it again...

As you restated, your exact words were:

"Please Laura, keep mum on such subjects in the future."

As phrased, that is not an opinion. It is a request to shut up. In essence, you only want to hear from her if she agrees with you, which means you do not respect her right of free speech.

How true! When they can’t find anything to say, they tell you to “shut-up”. That is getting old! They think they are so clever, but they aren’t! In a way, I sort of pity them.

As they must have noticed, you and I don’t “mind” well! (as in behave!)As bossy little bullies always do, they want others to obey their rules. When some of us don’t, they tell us to get lost, grow up, mind your own business, etc.. Take your pick! :^)

My favorite is saying "You attack anyone who disagrees with you," when the only ones doing that are they, themselves.

And yet, they can't seem to see that they are projecting their own flaws on people who are doing nothing of the sort.

Once again, free speech is a one sided coin to them. They have the freedom to say whatever they want, no matter how preposterous or mean, and we just need to shut up and go away.

I'm glad there are so many here who see through their little game.

(At least the mad one admitted that he wanted all Bush supporters "purged" in a (rare) moment of honesty. It's hard to pull that old cat back in the bag once you let it out. :)

Yes, I make a habit of saying "please" before telling folks to shut up. How about this, don't put words in my mouth Wolf. BTW.. anything phrased here in at FR is an opinion, it is so stated that JimRob does not endorse the said opinions of such posters as myself and yourself for that matter. Mrs. Bush had a "CINO" moment...

You can have the last word, because I don't plan on wasting my time with you furthermore. Place your best bait up sir and good day to ya.

What a nasty thing to say.

Why would any decent, respectable 60+ year old man make such un-called for, cutting and indefensible comments?

The only thing that makes sense is that you are so insecure in your own views and behavior that you lash out and make ridiculous assertions to take the focus off your own weak argumentation.

(If you hadn't done the exact thing before, I would make no comment, but your repeated MO here is beneath a respectable man, ed)

No, we don't want you to get lost...you're here for comic relief...just want you to know that you have a lot of company which thinks just as you do: "birds of a feather, and all" YOU SEE!

I'm not in denial about President Bush. He wasn't as strong against spending as I would have liked, and he didn't respond to his critics as many would have liked. Unfortunately, he didn't get much support from Republicans in Congress, or leadership in the GOP, whether or not he was the titular head of the party.

Those weenies abandoned him when things got tough in Iraq, and the MSM and Democrats started screaming. President Bush, on the other hand, just rolled with the punches, because he was more concerned about the service people he'd decided to send into harm's way. THEY were more important to him than his political position or even personal popularity, and he still believes that today. For THAT, and for taking the lumps he did in order to keep this country safe from further attacks after 9/11, I'll be eternally grateful to him.

Because he was so concerned about national security, he spent his political capital on that, was blocked by partisan Democrats, and the weenies in his own party in Congress, and wasn't able to get legislation passed that could have mitigated somewhat the economic problems caused by the mortgage crisis, created in large part by those same partisan Democrats.

I agree with your post in its entirety, SuziQ.

History will show that he made the wise choice in attending to his Constitutional duties and ignoring his critics. Most of these folks know that, but it's obviously still "trendy" to bash him.

There's still a lot of the same wimpy behavior that the Republicans have displayed in wanting to run away from the "unpopular" guy revealing itself right here.

Good thing some of us have moved beyond needing to be in the IN crowd.

My dear young lady,

Were I in any way insecure in my views, I would never share them with the unappreciative, especially those that scold me for undefined and unexplained offences. ;o)

Suzi, you have the facts down fairly well; could you please educate the other lovely ladies here, so that they might refrain from their misdirected assaults?

Thank you.

Apparently, you don't want to hear from anyone who doesn't agree with you. Seems to be a hallmark of what's left of the conservative movement in this country. C'est la vie. C'est la guerre.

Hah! Not ruddy likely. They've had to listen to the sunshine patriots hammer the President for at least the last 4 years. Contrary to popular belief, we don't all agree with every single decision he made, so we're a far cry from 'Bushbots'.

It's extremely annoying to see how many deserted him, when he needed the support the most, then complain that he didn't do enough to fight against attacks from the MSM and the Democrats. If folks are angry about the economy, they should think about just how much support the President got from them when he was trying to keep the Democrats from adding fuel to the mortgage crisis fire in 2003 and again in 2005. Those were the same time as the low spots in Iraq, and folks got scared that things were going badly for us, and they started their sniping, instead of supporting the President in both his foreign and domestic agendas.

It got worse when he was trying to do something about the illegal immigration problem. He was fighting against the Democrats who didn't want ANYTHING done to solve it, but he went too far. Because of this, some conservatives joined the Democrats in their BDS, and made it impossible for him to get anything done. This, along with the profligate spending of the Republicans in Congress, which ruined their chances to hang onto Congress in 2008, and the unwillingness of John McCain to hold to the principles of the Republican party, combined to turn voters against the GOP, and usher That One into the Oval Office.

So, I understand these ladies completely, having seen what they've had to endure from some of the conservatives on FR for the last few years.
