The Vietnam War Memorial of Victoria (Australia)
7th June 2009 | vanity

Posted on 06/06/2009 4:19:31 PM PDT by naturalman1975

Yesterday I was in Dandenong, a city/suburb towards the South East edge of Melbourne.

The Dandenong RSL (Returned and Services League of Australia - may be roughly considered to be the Australian equivalent of something like the VFW or American Legion in the US) is the site of the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial of Victoria. It's quite a small memorial, but quite an impressive one, and I decided to take some photos to share with other people.

These were taken using the small and not particularly wonderful camera on my cell phone. At some point, I intend to head out there with a decent camera and hopefully at a time when the nearby shopping centre carpark is less full, but for now, I still think the pictures are worth seeing.

This seems appropriate here. This audio file is AWESOME. Speakers up and grab a Kleenex.

The acid test for whether nations are true US allies or not was Vietnam. Australia passed the test. So did Thailand. Nobody else did. So if you want to know who’s been in our corner through thick and thin, it is Australia — who fought on our side during every war in the 20th century (and who never protested against us about anything. Friends like that are to be kept and cultivated.

The "allies" forgot about us, the guys who made up the military ~ that's who they're allied to ~ not the politicians.

We remember who did what.

Here's another relatively "new" Veterans' memorial. It's in Columbus, Indiana, a place you might not visit unless you are traveling between Indianapolis and Louisville.

Check it out:

It's not too far from the Atturberry-Bakalar Museum.

Although dedicated to all veterans from Bartholemew County Indiana it has engraved on the columns the names of the 126 war dead. That'd include a few relatives of mine.
