Obama Weighs Plan Allowing 9/11 Suspects to Plead Guilty
New York Times ^ | 6/5/09 | WILLIAM GLABERSON

The Obama administration is considering a change in the law for the military commissions at the prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, that would clear the way for detainees facing the death penalty to plead guilty without a full trial.

The provision could permit military prosecutors to avoid airing the details of brutal interrogation techniques. It could also allow the five detainees who have been charged with the Sept. 11 attacks to achieve their stated goal of pleading guilty to gain what they have called martyrdom.

The proposal, in a draft of legislation that would be submitted to Congress, has not been publicly disclosed. It was circulated to officials under restrictions requiring secrecy. People who have read or been briefed on it said it had been presented to Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates by an administration task force on detention.

I would prefer that they plead un-alive.

“They are trying to give the 9/11 guys what they want: let them plead guilty and get the death penalty and not have to have a trial,” said Maj. David J. R. Frakt of the Air Force, a Guantánamo defense lawyer.

I'm OK with that...

And when will oscumbo be eligible to plead guilty?

Ultimately he has already done as much damage to the U.S. as the 9/11 "suspects"(???) hasn't he?

Couldn’t you argue that allowing them Martyrdom makes us less safe because Al-Qaida could use it as a recruitment tool?

Obama logic - Killing you is more humane then pouring water up your nose....

"This unfortunately strikes me as an effort to get rid of the problem in the easiest way possible, which is to have those people plead guilty and presumably be executed. But I think it’s going to lack international credibility."

Oh my gosh, they won't love us any more!

We need a chance to bid on the opportunity to execute these guys. This should not be the exclusive privilege of the military.

I'm sure there are people in this area who would easily bid more than $1 million for the chance to shoot one of these guys.

cool. so they can plead and do some time in an American prison? I doubt they’ll learn what torture is in one of those places.

“and giving the terrorists what they want makes us more safe how?”

Rhetorical I know, but as you know it doesn’t.

The only gain in such a change of law as I see it is not in the lie of not having to reveal the alleged brutal interrogation methods, but is to provide martyrdom for Obama’s Muslim comrades.

A lottery?

and the vast amounts of money it generates could take care of the 911 victims families for the rest of their lives.

Very clever indeed.

If I were them, I wouldn’t trust Obama. He’d probably double cross them and set them free.

I say give them all sex change operations and make them live under Sharia Law.

Shrewd move; trumps Congress, shortcircuits military law and allows the blame to settle back on the Bush Administration while setting a new imperialistic oversight within the CIC’s purview.

Must’ve been part of what he achieved yesterday among his many accomplishments during his homecoming.

How pissed would the terrorists be if they were hoping for martyrdom, yet instead we provided video footage of them being freed from prison?
The downside is they would return to jihad and might be successful killing themselves the next time around.

Yes, you have open bidding, ebay style for the rights to be the trigger man. You can be open about who you are or you can be concealed and unidentified.

Then, for those of us who cant afford it, you offer the event on Pay Per View and make it cheap so everybody will tune in.

Then top the whole thing off by dipping the bullet in pigs blood and let the bastard know exactly what you are doing.

This is Obama playing both sides aka Clintonian triangulation. This is why he could be quite dangerous and win a 2nd term. He executes some terrorists as a foil to hide behind to shunt criticism of his other nonsensical terrorist loving policies.
