Canada latest to turn away Guantanamo detainees

OTTAWA (AFP) — Canada has turned down US requests to take in Guantanamo detainees, becoming the third US ally to put a snag in efforts to shutter the infamous "war on terror" prison, an official said Friday.

The United States asked Ottawa last month to take in three of 17 Chinese Muslim detainees held at the US naval base in southern Cuba, Canadian immigration ministry spokesman Alykhan Velshi told AFP.

Ottawa had also received a similar request from the former George W. Bush administration to resettle the ethnic Uighurs, he said. And it was pressed publicly by Amnesty International to take them in, but declined.

"Canada's position remains unchanged: twice we have been asked, and twice we have said no," Velshi said.

"There are significant security concerns related to Guantanamo inmates, and our immigration legislation states that foreign nationals who are members of terrorist groups or who have engaged in acts of terrorism are inadmissible to Canada," he said.

Germany and Australia were also been urged to take in Guantanamo inmates, but both have appeared reticent.

The 17 Uighur inmates were captured in the wake of the US invasion of Afghanistan and have been held at Guantanamo for the past seven years.

If we don’t care enough about our prisoners to keep them locked up, why should anyone else want to lock them up for us?

And if we don’t trust them enough to admit them as immigrants, why would anyone else want to let them in as immigrants?

This is our problem and ours alone. If we consider them a threat, keep them where they are. We built Guantanamo for a reason, and its for people we dare not release.

And if we no longer want to keep them locked up, then either return them to their homeland, or if thats not possible then return them to Afghanistan or Pakistan and let them find their way from there.

Here’s how we get other countries to take the prisoners:

Tell the UN that, since NO country is willing to take these prisoners, and the American people refuse to have them on US soil, we have no choice but to execute all of them.

At that point, the handwringing and whining will be at record levels, and Euroweenies and others will be forced to take them.

What if the Euroweenies and others won’t take them?

Execute the prisoners.

Either way, the problem is solved.
