N. Korea's Kim Jong-nam May Defect to China [Japanese Newspaper]
(Tokyo = Yonhap News) Choi Irak =
Kim Jong-nam, Kim Jong-il's eldest son, is currently staying in Macau, and could defect to China, Sankei Shimbun in Japan reported on June 5, quoting intelligence sources.
According to the paper, the purge of Kim Jong-nam's associates has started as a part of rapidly laying the foundation for Kim Jong-un as the successor.
N. Korea's State Security Department detained several associates of Kim Jong-nam around 8pm on Apr. 3 in Pyongyang. Upon hearing the news, Kim Jong-nam investigated on the situation of his associates. When he learned that more associates were detained on Apr. 7, Kim Jong-nam thought that this is the purge as a part of succession process, and decided to stay in Macau.
On Apr.4, during his conversation with his No. 1(?) wife living in Beijing, he told her, "Last night a friend of mine from my school days has been arrested." On Apr. 7, he telephoned an associate in another country and said, "Lately people around me are being detained by State Security Department. Some disturbing events are happening one after another. I won't go back to Pyongyang for a while."
N. Korea's ruling Worker's Party notified their decision to install Kim Jong-un as the successor, but China refuses to go along with it, demanding that N. Korea stops hereditary rule, pursues reform and open-door policy, and gives up its nuclear weapons.

Bloody intercine purges are pretty common during dynastic succession struggles.

Yes. I believe it is in the works. I would hope some sense could be talked into him and he would open even more to the West and could be used as a government in exile or at least a sharp pebble in the boot of Dad to upset his plans and that of the two KPA Generals to install "the Kid", aka "General" Jong Un as the New Star over Mt. Paektu. On the other hand, anything that smacks of Dynasty in North Korea is reprehensible, and even a pro-West or pro-China Kim Jong il son would be unwelcome. What they need is free elections and a clean break from the Kim Clan. However, perhaps Jong Nam could be transitional in that effort.
I would prefer he defect to a Western nation, maybe even Japan (so he can have unlimited access to Tokyo Disneyland, soaplands in Yoshiwara and Akasaka Korean nightclubs, 24/7), and he would also be incredibly more useful in the hands of the West rather than with China.

FLASH: Yes, the PURGE is apparantly ON.R.E.N.K. reports today they are rounding up Jong Nam's (Number 1 son) associates in Pyongyang. They may be executing, or taking them to prison camps, or certainly roughing them up.

I think China will grab him and won't let him go. He could be the No.1 candidate for heading pro-China puppet regime in N. Korea. Unless he travels again to Europe and defect there.
