Board votes to fire teacher charged with having sex with student

Maine Township High School District 207 officials voted to terminate the employment of Jennifer Espinosa, the Maine East teacher charged on suspicion of having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old former student.
Board members voted 7-0 on the issue during Monday's regular Board of Education meeting in the board room of the Ralph Frost Administration Center, 1131 S. Dee Road.

District spokesman Dave Beery explained the decision Tuesday, which became effective immediately.
"They voted to terminate her employment," he said.
The decision stems from two charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse against Espinosa after the 38-year-old special-education teacher and Park Ridge resident was arrested May 23. The arrest began as a drug stop when police drove behind Espinosa's car and pulled her over because of suspected marijuana use.
Police reportedly recognized a 16-year-old boy in her car as a local gang member and recovered a bag of marijuana. A 22-year-old, Alejandro Landi, an alleged gang member from Niles, was also in the car and was charged with misdemeanor drug possession.
"I think it's certainly safe to say that the board review of the matter came about as a result of charges filed against Mrs. Espinosa," Beery said. "I can say that."
Beery said substitute teachers have been assigned to teach Espinosa's classes since she was charged and will continue through the end of the school year.

Yes, they need to vote - it’s a procedural matter that the board must take up by rules set forth through negotiations with the union (Unions suck).

Lighten up, it’s mud and black fly season up there now. Probably a long cold snowy winter too.

I agree. A good defense attorney (or beautician, actually) can work wonders...so it is quite possible she could walk.

I think we need a better picture before we can pronounce guilty or not.
