GOP salivating for N.J. governorship
POLITICO ^ | 6/2/09 | Andy Barr

With New Jersey Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine lagging in the polls, Republicans couldn’t be more enthusiastic about their chances of ousting him in November.

But first they must settle an intraparty conflict over who’s best suited to do the job — former U.S. Attorney Chris Christie or former Bogota, N.J., Mayor Steve Lonegan.

Even if they win, what will Republicans do with the Governorship? In NJ, that just means “Democrat-Lite.”

No way, no how. All we need to do here is elect a STRONG CONSERVATIVE candidate to oppose the Dems. That would be Mayor Steve Lonegan.

Steve Lonegan is no Dem Lite, but the candidate that the state GOP is backing , Chris Christie, IS . .

FIFTEEN REASONS WHY MAYOR STEVE LONEGAN WILL BEAT JON CORZINE

1. ONLY LONEGAN KNOWS BUDGETS AND HOW TO CUT THEM. Mayor Lonegan is the only candidate with a specific plan to straighten out our fiscal mess, reduce spending and debt, decrease regulations and cut taxes.

2. ONLY LONEGAN HAS THE EXECUTIVE EXPERIENCE. As a three-term Mayor and successful businessman, Steve understands the problems business owners and local elected officials face, and as Governor he will focus on solutions.

3. ONLY LONEGAN HAS A PROVEN RECORD. As Mayor, Steve froze spending and debt and kept taxes far below inflation. He reduced payrolls, increased efficiency, improved the business climate and stood up to local power brokers.

4. ONLY LONEGAN HAS A HISTORY OF WINNING FOR TAXPAYERS. Whether fighting wasteful spending, unconstitutional debt, public employee unions, or state bureaucrats, Steve Lonegan always stands up for the forgotten taxpayer.
Whether fighting wasteful spending, unconstitutional debt, public employee unions, or state bureaucrats, Steve Lonegan always stands up for the forgotten taxpayer.
5. ONLY LONEGAN WILL UNITE THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. Steve Lonegan is the only candidate with a broad appeal, a consistent conservative record and a strong message all Republicans can support.

6. ONLY LONEGAN CAN WIN DEMOCRATS AND INDEPENDENTS. Steve’s conservative record kept Republican Council control for ELEVEN STRAIGHT ELECTIONS in a 2-1 Democrat town that voted 64% for Barack Obama and 66% for Frank Lautenberg.

7. ONLY LONEGAN HAS THE GRASSROOTS NETWORK. Steve can count on thousands of energized and enthusiastic supporters across the state, giving Republican campaigns energy and excitement that hasn’t been seen in years.

8. ONLY LONEGAN WILL RAISE THE MONEY. With nearly 1,000 donors already, Steve Lonegan is an aggressive fundraiser and the only Republican who is raising the money necessary to counter Corzine’s bankroll.

9. ONLY LONEGAN HAS THE “FIRE” TO WIN. Steve is ready to win. He needs no time to decide his future and is already working night and day to build the campaign organization needed to win in November.

10. ONLY LONEGAN WILL FIGHT THE “ABBOTT” DECISION. Steve believes if a school district cannot educate a student at the state average cost, then that student should have a right to a voucher to go to the school of his choice.

11. ONLY LONEGAN WILL STOP COAH. No one has been more outspoken against Corzine’s attempt to force more than 100,000 Low Income Housing units into every New Jersey town than Steve Lonegan, and he will stop it as Governor.

12. ONLY LONEGAN WILL DEFEND HOME RULE. Steve opposes Corzine’s plan to eliminate small towns and school boards and put Trenton in charge of local zoning. Steve supports each town’s right to govern itself as it sees fit.

13. ONLY LONEGAN WILL SWEEP REPUBLICANS TO VICTORY. Steve’s conservative message will bring victories up and down the ballot, just as it did in Steve’s three Mayoral elections, when every GOP candidate running won in Bogota.

14. ONLY LONEGAN HAS ALREADY DEFEATED CORZINE. Steve led the effort to stop Corzine’s 800% Toll Hike scheme and led the fight that stopped Corzine’s $450 Million Embryonic Stem Cell Bonding proposal.

15. ONLY LONEGAN WILL BEAT CORZINE IN NOVEMBER. People said Ronald Reagan couldn’t win. However, Steve Lonegan - like Reagan - is a strong campaigner with a compelling message who will pull no punches. He’s ready, and will beat Jon Corzine. The time is now!

Although it would be exciting to have a more conservative governor like Lonegan, I wonder what it would all mean if the state legislature is still controlled by democrats. I suppose he could slow down the forces of destruction.

Results of a Quinnipiac University survey released last week indicates former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan, R, polls ahead of Gov. Jon Corzine, D, with 42 to 40 percent.

That’s the only opll we care about right now. He can win this if Republicans vote vote the conservative candidate instead of the party line.

Isn’t Senator Lautenberg at least 90 years old, and the Governor get to appoint the replacement, if he is unable to continue?

That appointment is the real price here.

yeah i was thinking along those same lines
support the more conservative candidate in the primary then vote against the Democrat in the general even if your favorite candidate does not win. every governorship we pick up gives us the potential for another Senator.

I reiterate - until/unless the 'Pubbies get their act together, NJ will retain its Dem governor. The whole concept of the 'Pubbies getting their act together means returning to their core conservative values.

To date, those 'Pubbies still in elected office have shown no inclination to return to their core values, nor has the so-called Republican "leadership". Barring a dramatic shift to the right by the current crop of 'Pubbie doormats, NJ will continue to elect corrupt Dems.

I have heard one swag that Lautenberg will resign, Corzine will appoint himself, then resign as Governor and appoint Dick Codey, who will run as an incumbent.

Who may not get support from Corzine, who may endorse Cory Booker. Just talk though.

—”It’s time for a conservative change, not more of the same.”

LONEGAN CAMPAIGN ANNOUNCES NEW TV AD: CHRISTIE’S TAX FANTASY
ORADELL, NJ – Mayor Steve Lonegan, the conservative Republican candidate for Governor, is running a new television ad hitting back at Chris Christie’s tax plan.

“Chris Christie says he is going to cut taxes but has offered no specifics about how he’ll do it. That’s why the Star Ledger called it “a fantasy.” This is what I’ve been saying all along. When you look at Christie’s plan, the numbers simply do not add up,” Lonegan said.

“My proposed $2.7 Billion tax cut will be the biggest tax cut in New Jersey history and lead to sustainable economic growth,” Lonegan added. “I will slash income taxes and implement a 2.9% flat tax, cut property taxes by 20% and we’ll do it by eliminating Billions in liberal spending that’s come out of Trenton.

“Christie continues to prove that he has no real plan and, if elected, will not bring about true change to New Jersey. Chris Christie represents more of the same failed leadership of the last 8 years. We need a real conservative Republican who understands how to best repair New Jersey’s economy and get businesses coming back to our state. And when elected, that’s exactly what I’ll do.”
