Newark TSO Finds Replica IEDs and Blasting Caps TSA Weekly

It was business as usual at Newark Liberty (N.J.) International Airport on May 8 when a male passenger checked his nine bags. But the quiet did not last long.

Two of the bags contained replica improvised explosive devices, accompanied by inert blasting caps.

"Finding these items demonstrates exactly why TSA is in the airport screening bags and passengers," said Newark FSD Barbara Powell.

Recognizing the threat items, TSO William Lynch immediately notified Supervisory TSO Al Graddy and Transportation Security Manager Thomas Willoughby, local management and law enforcement. Bomb Appraisal Officer Thomas Carroll immediately arrived on the scene, declared the items a threat and ordered an immediate evacuation.

With the possibility of an explosive, authorities evacuated several gate areas, the security checkpoint and the baggage screening area.

Though the incident displaced about a thousand passengers and affected at least 9 flights, the incident reminds TSA employees that a threat item could be detected at any time.

Once cleared by the bomb squad, local TSA worked to repopulate the terminal and rescreen all passengers and employees. The passenger was allowed to continue on his flight.

"Our goal is to keep passengers safe and keep harmful items off planes," said Powell. "Every once in a while it is a fellow passenger who interrupts an otherwise streamlined process. These items never should have been packed."

"Finding these items demonstrates exactly why TSA is in the airport screening bags and passengers,"

Huh? TSA is in the airport screening bags so they can find a replica IED? I thought it was to ensure even those who are too lazy to work at a fast food joint can find employment.

TSA worked to repopulate the terminal

That is what I thought TSA did all day anyway. Since when do reporters start mindlessly aping the mindless bureaucratese of bureaucrats.

The reporter might have made further inquiries, such as what was the passenger's professional capacity that he was carrying these things. Was he carrying fake "IED's" or was he carry dummy HE made up in packages that might be used for a legitimate purpose. Were these training aids or was this a nutcase trying to see what he could get away with.

However, since the passenger was not carrying HE he certainly was not carrying HEDs whetever the "TSOs" thought he might be carrying.

Naught Mohammed!! You interrupted the "streamlined process." 1,000 lashes with a wet noodle and don't you ever dare test our systems again!

The passenger was allowed to continue on his flight.

So then this guy was probably a Bomb Disposal trainer or something and this article is horsepucky.

You don't let a guy who had fake bombs on a plane. You detain him and sweat him down for a while.

All they are saying here is he should have shipped the stuff via UPS instead of packing it.

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then... the TSA’s track record on stopping contraband isn’t the best, they have just stopped reporting on the stuff that DOES get through...

...and every now and then when they get busted for letting some kind of weapon or device through the gates, they and their stupivisors just step back and say, “oops, our bad!” and then go right back to work without so much as a stern look from the upper chain of command.
