Lisa P. Jackson, the woman chosen by President Barack Obama to head the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), told attendees at a conference on environmental justice that minorities and low-income people are the victims of pollution by U.S. companies and businesses.
There are too many places in this country where pollution and environmental degradation fall disproportionately on low-income and minority communities, Jackson said via video at the third annual State of the Environmental Justice in America 2009 conference in Arlington, Va., on Friday.
People have fallen ill with diseases like asthma and cancer. Businesses wont set up shop in those neighborhoods, and good jobs are hard to find, she said.
We cant stand by and accept those disparities, Jackson, the first black to hold the post at the EPA, told conference attendees. At EPA, part of our central mission is to show all Americans that we work for them.
The conference has its roots in a 1994 executive order issued by President Bill Clinton and not reversed by President George W. Bush over his two terms in office that directed federal agencies and offices to develop a strategic plan to make sure minorities and low-income communities were not disproportionately harmed by toxic waste and other pollutants generated by industries and manufacturing plants in the United States.
Strategic plans have been issued by many of those agencies and offices in the years since the order put in place, including in 2007 when the U.S. Dept. of Energy (DOE) announced a new five-year plan.
Environmental justice means that those who have suffered a disproportionate share of environmental burdens should enjoy some of the environmental benefits of publicly funded production activities, the plan says.

eff off lulubell, we’ve had it with the victim blather
Another marxist, racist, incompetent POS
“Of the People, by the People, for the People” Where is the environment?
Zer0 has surrounded himself with identity-politics radicals whose goal is the division of the United States into the producers and makers on the one side and the users and takers on the other, and the Zer0 administration is 100% on the side of the latter.
she can start by approving that wind farm off of Ted Kennedy’s back porch...
So let’s tax carbon. That’ll really help the low-income folks.
The bad news is Obamie is going to race bait business and racialize the environmentalist agenda.
The good news is the left tried this before and the American people tossed them out on their butts. Americans would not listen to environmentalsists for years after they pulled this one in the past. It is a black racist shake down con game that kills jobs.
Women and Minorites Hardest Hit!!
They read this SH** in China and just laugh at us.
Playbook Marxism, create class divisions, envy and hatred, and use it to advance the Communist agenda. By the time the agenda nears completion, the minorities, poor and disadvantage puppets of the revolution will get thrown away.
Every friggin agency is being abused to make some kind of social justice. Social justice is just a code word for the government discriminating against one group in favor of another.
So the polluting companies buy carbon credits and keep on polluting only now they pay to do it. How does that help the people who live next door to the polluters??
It doesnt, but it makes someone rich and the government gets more tax money. The people still have asthma and all the other complaints
Cap and trade undoubtedly the biggest scam to ever hit this country. If you are going to rip these companies off anyay make them clean up their pollution, not just buy a credit and keep on polluting.
True “environmental justice” would include not regulating small family businesses in poor rural areas out of operation in an effort to save some critter that the urban folks and enviros have become attached to. It is not shutting down communities dependent upon wood from National Forests to operate their local saw mill. It is not burdening private property owners in poor rural areas with requirements to benefit the public. That is true justice.
Communist. Looser. But I repeat myself.
Thank you Dick Nixon for giving us fascism in the federal government disguised as the EPA.
We are surrounded by domestic enemies. Bring back dueling.
