Experts Expect Low Turnout For NJ Primaries

TRENTON (CBS) ―

Turnout is expected to be low for New Jersey's primary elections Tuesday.

And that could make the top race interesting.

Political scientists said that if a lot of Republican voters stay home, conservative Steve Lonegan could have a chance to upset front-runner Chris Christie. Assemblyman Rick Merkt is also in the race.

The winner will face Gov. Jon Corzine in the general election in November. The Democrat also has primary competition, but no one has mounted a substantial campaign against him.

It's been 20 years since even one-fifth of the state's voters participated in a gubernatorial primary.

State Assembly seats and local offices are also on the ballot across New Jersey.

Christie was born in Newark and raised in Livingston. He has lived in New Jersey his entire life.

Does that mean that New Jersey voters have given up?

I agree. The media seems to have its way with people who don’t do their own homework. I will be out voting for Lonegan bright and early Tuesday morning.
