WWJT: Who Would Jesus Torture?
Townhall.com ^ | 5/30/09 | Doug Giles

A Christian radio show host asked me the other day how I could, as a believer, be cool with waterboarding terrorists for intel crucial to our national security—or, as I like to call it, the implementation of the Irrigation for Information Act. Irrigation sounds so much more pleasant than torture, oui? Oui.

I told my inquiring host that as a patriotic white male Christian redneck, as far as I can deduce from the holy text, Jesus and the balance of Scripture seem to be okay with dunking Achmed if said butt munch has the 411 regarding the 10/20 of the next mass slaughter of innocent Americans. Call me crazy. I’m well aware, however, that I could be committing an exegetical error given the fact that I’m white and male and all. This is my cross.

Jesus would blow his mind and go ballistic on the money changers.

That would probably include those who manipulate the churches' freedom of speech with the US tax code.

Reminds me of Bill O’Rielly, saying that Jesus would be against the death penalty. Of course, Jesus as the “word that became flesh” was also the creator, and instituted the death penalty not only for man, but for himself in order to redeem mankind... The lack of biblical knowledge and simpleton questions like this weary me.

I am reminded of a quote:

"The needs of the many outweigh the need of the few." - Spock

It's not scriptural but it is logical.

REV 14: 9-11
9A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: "If anyone worships the beast and his image and receives his mark on the forehead or on the hand, 10he, too, will drink of the wine of God's fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. He will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. 11And the smoke of their torment rises for ever and ever. There is no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and his image, or for anyone who receives the mark of his name."

By the way, I should have mentioned, I like the way he handled the "what would Jesus do" question. Again,I am really offended by christian radio hosts, liberals and others using that approach to give themselves some sort of moral cover. Especially, christian radio hosts, if you have an opinion then support it with scripture.

And as for the death penalty question I mentioned earlier...study the "revenger of blood" the word translated revenger is translated redeemer elsewhere in scripture. The "redeemer of blood" has to take no pleasure in carrying out his duty. Just like God takes no pleasure in the destruction of the wicked. But as in the model, just because God takes no pleasure in it, does not mean to imply that the wicked will be able to skate by and escape destruction.

Uhhh, waterboarding is relatively mild compared to the methods used by Romans in Jesus day to gain information. The Romans would laugh at our simulated drownings - they tie you to a boulder and throw you in the Jordan for jaywalking.

I don’t know what JESUS would do, but I’d like to hang the kenyan magic negro by his ankles from the George Washington bridge in D.C.

Exactly! I've heard similar things on the radio and thought precisely the same thing. The whole world stands under condemnation of death...the wages of sin is death.

Jesus is the Second Person in the Blessed Trinity. He IS God.

God saved Moses and the Jews who had been pinned in by Pharoah's army on the coast of the Red Sea by parting the waters to allow Moses and his followers to escape on dry land.

When Pharoah's army followed, God let the waters crash down on Pharoah's army waterboarding the entire pursuing army to death.

If you believe waterboarding is torture (which I do not) and if you are an orthodox Christian who believes in the Holy Trinity (which I do), you are forced to believe that Jesus would waterboard people in pursuit of evil purposes...and that He would waterboard them to death.

I realize I am in the minority here, but I do not believe Christians should support the torture (yes, waterboarding ins torture) of prisoners. How did Jesus say prisoners were to be treated? Everyone who says vital info was obtained (no proof of that, unless you are willing to take whatever gov’t officials say as proof) and that makes torture OK is saying that the end justifies the means.

Some of my own family would agree heartily with the sentiments expressed by Mr. Giles, but I think the abuse of prisoners is a stain on our national character and should never be supported or condoned by Christians. After all, what is a prisoner? He is someone totally in his captor’s control and is helpless. Abuse of a person who cannot defend himself is barbaric, no matter how horrible that person is.

“It’s not scriptural but it is logical.”

It’s not scriptural, it’s Marxist.

We’re not talking about prisoners who are helpless here. We are talking about people who have relevant and current knowledge of plans to do bad things to huge numbers of people. That is not a helpless person, that is a scheming, conniving, evil person who is asserting their opportunity to assist those who wish to do great harm.

This is not the same as just torturing helpless people for fun. Has nothing to do with the helpless prisoner you have justifiable compassion for.
