It's easy to second-guess the guy without standing in his shoes. How thoroughly would you have "thought it through", if you knew that someone DEFINITELY killed one of your loved ones? This man may be the dad of a young woman who died as a result of a botched abortion at Tiller's clinic.

Just like the so-called "keyboard commandos" are admonished about how bad-a** they can be about who they're gonna shoot at when TSHTF, the "keyboard preachers" need to think a little bit more.

You are correct, we don’t yet know his exact motive, and the for instance you give is an interesting one - but after about 5 prior versions of this across the 1990s, I think we may have a pretty good educated guess at this.
