Immigrant advocates say they've seen nothing like it before or since: A prosecutor looking for illegal immigrants seized thousands of confidential tax records from an income tax preparer popular with Hispanics in this northern Colorado city.
The October seizures led to identity theft and criminal impersonation charges against more than 70 people, and prosecutors allege that as many as 1,300 suspected illegal immigrants were working using false or stolen Social Security numbers.
The investigation started after a Texas man alerted Weld County authorities that his identity was being used. The suspect in that case told authorities he had filed his taxes with Amalia's Translation and Tax Services, a business widely used by immigrants in Greeley, where one-third of the population is Hispanic.

I would have LOVED to see someone at Dallas ISD JAILED over “assigning” ssn’s to new teachers without proper work documents so they could get into the classroom faster.

Jeff Joseph, a Denver immigration attorney with four clients who were arrested in Operation Numbers Game, said there are people who will have a difficult time staying in the U.S. even if criminal charges are thrown out.
That's because immigration court imposes a tougher standard than criminal courts. Defendants have to prove not only that the search and seizure of tax records was illegal, but also that the conduct of those executing the search was “outrageous and egregious,” Joseph said.
“So, the real tragedy is although the criminal cases will probably be kicked out, there are severe collateral consequences to all of these individuals who were simply working, supporting their families and trying to follow the law by paying their taxes,” he said.
Many of those caught in Operation Numbers Game continue to insist they did nothing wrong.
“If it's a crime to pay taxes, then the IRS should also be charged because they're the ones who gave us the ITIN,” said Maria Eugenia Rey, 37, who is in the country illegally, along with her husband, Luis. He has yet to enter a plea, and his wife said he has not had charges read to him by a judge.
“He hasn't declared himself guilty, and he won't declare himself guilty because he hasn't committed a crime,” said Rey.
Because he hasn’t committed a crime? OH YES HE HAS! The man and his wife are in this country illegally!

A lot of Americans never even leave the United States and most of them cannot imagine international travel and forging government documents and living in foreign countries under stolen and false identities.
I think that it is impossible to see someone that can pull off those types of crimes as anything decent no matter how nice and humble they may appear on the surface. The people that do that are committed to living a life involving some pretty sophisticated crime and they are willing to adopt it as a permanent lifestyle and career.
The crime rate within that community and the tolerance of it, reflects the character of that community in general.
The question is whether two wrongs (illegally entering the country and use of a fraudulent or stolen identity) can trump IRS confidentiality laws. It is going to come to the question of “fruits from a poisonous tree” (IRS docs confidentiality and how the prosecutor got them) and whether this will apply enough to wipe out the two other crimes committed by the illegals.
Stay tuned. This could be a very big court case and is another reason why racist bigot Sotomayor must not be appointed to the Supreme Court.
They are, courts have ruled recently, that if they don’t know the person who’s identity they are using, they are innocent.
The IRS and our government HAVE to be in on the scam. If I file a tax return and I have a documented history, but then several more people begin to file tax returns using my legit SS# but different addresses and employers and probably different names, what happens?
The IRS does not say to you that someone is using your identity, they just keep the tax income if any and give the returns if any, including huge Earned Income Credits.
A few years ago I read a story about a girl who applied for a job at Target and Target told her she already worked there. She went to the IRS/SSA and they confirmed that there were 34 people out there using her SS# but they would not tell her who or where they were so that she could get her identity back.
All I can figure is the government must think it is profitable for the SSA or the IRS or both.
The IRS taxes American citizens who sell drugs. Why shouldn’t it tax illegal aliens who are breaking the law by being here and stealing identities?
I have absolutely no sympathy for either group. They all seem to be psyhcopaths. They can’t see where they are doing anything wrong. Except perhaps getting caught.
A bigger problem for America is the ongoing criminal enterprise we sometimes refer to as the American government. Regardless of political party, they want the illegals here. More and more Americans are becoming aware of the way the politicians have betrayed us. It’s time for change alright. That change will flush out the current bunch of scum who are in Congress.
Up until now there has been no armed conflict in America’s streets because of politics. That is the way things are done in many countries. Now, with the degeneration of our culture and the arrogance of our leaders we are closer to that terrible day than we have been since the Civil War.
