Whatever happens to Susan Boyle on Saturday night, her place is secure in folk memory. The moment the 48-year-old Scottish spinster put a microphone to her mouth on the theatre-of-cruelty stage of the UK television show Britains Got Talent, faces froze and fantasy took over.
The three judges on the ITV program had greeted with rolled eyeballs and sniggers the arrival of an uncoiffed contestant in a saggy, off-white frock. Those world-weary prejudices choked in their throats as Boyle began to sing I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables in a voice as full as Loch Lomond in flood.
Her dream, Boyle said, was to be as popular as the Andrew Lloyd Webber singer, Elaine Paige. Overnight, Paige was eclipsed.
Almost 62 million people have watched Boyle's performance on YouTube.

I am happy to read of your concern. It is well founded, for that horrible so-called newspaper, the Sun (UK) is on line via Drudge. This lady has started to use obscenities at persons simply "winding her up". Just this evening on Canadian T/V came the news of the immense pressure on her. There has been a plea- "Everyone back off and let her alone".
I am inclined to preach a little, but the "madding crowd" in my native country, love to boost a person to the heights. Next, they often enjoy that person's downfall. Scotland has it's share of the fallen. Few will have heard of Benny Lynch here. Scotland's hero and his early demise.
Yep, get the "bawbees" in The Royal Bank of Scotland madam, says I.
Watched both videos.
Elaine Page is a professional musical theater singer. Great emoting, voice not that great.
Susan Boyle is an amateur, and it shows. But she has a vocal range that Page doesn’t which is demonstrated by the difference in how both handled the very last refrain. Boyle naile those high notes, whereas Page didn’t even dare to try.
What a snide writer.
I am personally sick of reading words like 'dowdy', 'spinster', 'uncoifed', 'mousy hair', 'clumping gait', 'dull looks', 'small talent', in relation to Susan Boyle.
The only small talent is in the writer, NORMAN LEBRECHT, who has nothing complimentary to say about Susan Boyle at all.
Paige considers herself an actress first and a singer second. See post #12.
Musical theater requires great acting skills and projection. And Elaine Paige has it in spades, which is the reason she is considered the First Lady of British Musical Theater.
As the immortal Al Jolson once said "on Broadway... you gotta make em cry".
I wonder what she will sing for the finals? Hard to find one as beautiful as the last two.
