TULSA, OK -- Tulsa Congressman John Sullivan has checked himself into the Betty Ford Center in California to treat an alcohol addiction.

"To ensure my success in this fight, I've decided to take a temporary leave of absence from Congress," he said in a statement. "I value my relationship with the citizens of Oklahoma's First Congressional District, whom I am privileged and honored to have served for the past eight years. So, I wanted to be open and honest on this tough situation.

"I ask for your continued support and prayers as I face the challenges that lay ahead. I look forward to returning to serve and work for you in the House of Representatives as soon as possible...."

Prayers for a full recovery in licking his addiction. The stresses in DC for those trying to fight for what’s right are enormous, especially these days.

Lucky for him he has that government health insurance that will pay for a stay at Betty Ford.

I say make em all take a drug and alcohol test. If they fail, fire them! IMMEDIATELY WITHOUT PAY!

We could probably rid ourselves of at least 80% of the trash we have.

Exactly what kind of alcohol test do you propose?

A glass of wine with lunch or dinner between votes and you’re fired? 2? 3?
Do we test them in their offices?
Committee meetings?
Only before votes?
Slow down the jerking knee.

Yep, I will take an alcohol influenced conservative vote over a stone cold liberal vote any day.

How bout the kind they do in most companies. They test you while you are AT WORK.

I'd say those that are making critical decisions that affect everybody in this nation should be held to the highest standard.

But then again, that's just me.

Again, define when they are ‘at work’?
When exactly are they subject to testing?
Who performs the testing?

Do you plan to modify the Constitution for this one little item since it is the House that sets conduct rules for the House and the Senate for the Senate?
Are you going to mandate certain rules they must now apply? If so it must be done Constitutionally.

Remember - the good people of America have previously elected people who were in JAIL at the time of their election - people who were sworn in upon their release.

But maybe we should just go back to prohibition.

And by the way that wasn’t really wine Jesus made at the wedding, and they were really drinking coolaid in the upper room...

Thanks! At least he is getting help for his alcohol unlike Ted Kennedy. Hope everything turns out okay.

Personally, I voted for Pruitt in the primaries when Steve Largent left...and always felt like the better man lost. I knew Scott Pruitt and worked on his campaign.

I also was pretty upset that Sullivan voted for TARP and then got up acting all sanctimonious at the TEA party...saying he was gonna tell Nancy and BO "to their faces" what we thought. I wonder if he ever did...I never heard anything more about it.

Sullivan isn't the worst, I guess...but he's not the best we could do, in my opinion.

That’s why politicians should not be allowed to speak at any of the TEA Parties. If they want to attend, fine, but they should just listen. It’s our turn to speak.

Something smells about this. All of a sudden he has an alcohol problem? When politicians check themselves into rehab, it is usually because a scandal is about to break and they want to avoid the press and have an excuse (In this case, alcoholism.) for why they did whatever it is that comes to light.

And why would he have to go all the way to CA?

If he has an alcohol problem, I wish he would have let someone else run for his seat last election. Now the bonehead Dem governor, Henry, will get to pick Sullivan’s replacement if he steps down.

There is nothing more to see here.

It really is an alcohol problem. There is no other scandal.

He’s been fighting it for several years. He’s been arrested for drunk driving a couple times I believe.

I will pray for him and wish him the best.

Then I wish he had not run for office again the last time. I had never heard that he was arrested for DUI. That alone should have kept him from running. Now Brad Henry the zero, may get to pick his successor.

A point of contention during Sullivan’s re-election campaign in 2004 was his police record. According to opponent Doug Dodd, Sullivan had been arrested four times in the Tulsa area.

Sullivan claimed to have only been arrested once. A review by local media concluded he had at least three arrests:[12] [13] for assault and battery of an off-duty police officer in 1982[14] and for public intoxication and disturbing the peace in 1985, while still under-age. His last arrest, at age 27, was due to an outstanding bench warrant issued after he failed to appear in court for a traffic violation.

Wow, I must have been asleep! I missed all that. Of course, the media never bothers to cover little-known opponents of politicians who are considered sure winners in their districts. Shows how much nerve pols have. If they feel they are in a safe district, then they don’t care what comes out about them. It’s like the crooked Louisiana governor who was under indictment but bragged that he would have to be caught in bed with a dead woman or a live boy to lose the election.
