I am a single parent, I pay property taxes, and I have successfully home schooled my children. Now, what were your excuses again?

Oh, I worked too. Lots of hours and the wife worked lots of hous. Then she quit for a 6 year stint when the kids needed the most help, then back to work. If one lives in an area where the property taxes are $4k-$6k(I will let you guess at my mortgage payments), one would have to work.

Well perhaps we are more efficient with the time we have with our children, because we have done quite well. Quick story: my oldest attended the same all-girls Catholic HS as Caroline Matthews, daughter of Chris. In religion class, during her sophomore year, in the fall of the year of the 2000 election, Caroline asked the nun if you could be Catholic and pro-choice. My daughter raised her hand and debated her on the spot, complete with references to the Catechism. She rocked everyone in the class back on their heels with her defense of her stand, including the nun. WE educated her to do that, no school that she attended. She just finished her sophomore year at the U of Dallas, an authentically Catholic university, and is currently working for a conservative organization in DC as an intern this summer. I won’t bore you with further instances of our kids demonstrating their faith and knowledge in their classrooms, but I assure you, we ARE the primary educators of our children. It does not take all day and control of their every interaction to do it.

And if you aren't aware, U of Dallas has a large number of homeschoolers. My daughter has been on the deans lists since she got there, so her private Catholic education has stood her in good stead.

It’s about what is important to you. I knew I wanted to homeschool my kids before I even graduated homeschool myself, so I studied a subject in college that was lucrative and had the potential to be done at home if I had to - one I could have supported a family on myself if my future husband had not been able to. My husband made the same choice at around the same age and went into engineering so that he could support his wife staying home with the kids. We would not have got past the initial stages of our courtship if both of us had not been committed to homeschooling.

When my husband lost his job and we had to relocate, we ruled out any areas like you are talking about because being a single-income household was more important to us than living in any particular area. We bought a used minivan and not a new one and we’ll make other sacrifices when we come to them but to us, there is nothing more important than our children’s future and to ensure that we have to homeschool.

I assumed that you were, as most on the forum are, referring to public school. The point of my comment in that respect is that if conservatives think that they can give their children to a leftist institution and not suffer the consequences they are deluding themselves...or, as a friend puts it, if you render your children to Caesar, you shouldn’t be surprised to get a Roman back.

Catholic and other Christian schools are an entirely different matter. In fact I am a fan of traditional Catholic education even though I am not Catholic. Sorry about the confusion on my part.

BTW, it is interesting that Matthews doesn’t use the government schools controlled by the liberals he shills for.

but not remotely surprising, NONE of them do.

Again, I am a single parent, I don’t hold down 6 figure jobs. Many times I made less than my daughter makes now on minimum wage. Until very recently, I have lived from paycheck to paycheck, always making sure to put away enough to buy curriculum and science supplies.

BUT! I made the choices necessary at the time because that was my priority.

You can make the excuses it was the property tax, so both parents had to work and this or that. It was your choice to live that lifestyle, and those are the consequences of those choices.

They are still excuses. I am not saying they aren’t valid, but I needed to put them into proper perspective. You don’t have to be rich to home school.

There is another gal on here who home schools, too. I am always impressed by her posts, she amazes me. But your bravo, bravo might be a bit much (blushing).

Everytime I hear my peers talk about their relationship (battles) with their teenage kids, I cannot tell you how my heart praises God for giving me the foresight, the willingness, and the strength to walk this road. I made it through those toughest of years with peace in our household, even with a girl, :-).

No you dont have to be rich to home school, but why home school?

American dream for me ‘IS’ 6 figures, or at least a chunk of it.

capitalism being the conservative paradigm(unless your a Mike Huckabee ‘social only’ conservative).

I had in the early past, lived from paycheck to paycheck and that is good, but I feel better with money.

I have never compromised my priorities as I have, as I already explained, trained my kids to know what is real and what is bogus in public schools.

I enjoy my boat, my guns, my hunting trips, fishing trips, cars....all of which I take my kids with me to do. I dont consider it excess, but I do I enjoy life with my ‘toys’ as do my kids.

Those are your choices with their related consequences. I am living the American dream, and will soon earn six figures. But, for the few short years that my kids were most in need of me, I made the choice to be their parent first.

realize that there are many of us who love our children just as much, do just as much for them, and just have made different choices. my family is fortunate in that we can afford to send our children to private schools. we think that is the BEST choice for us, after considering ALL of the alternatives. i think people should stop judging others based on their own circumstances and choices. i think home-schooling is great, but the attitude that is often present on threads like these is that parents who don’t homsechool somehow have chosen to throw their kids under the bus by not. sorry, i don’t buy it. i know without a doubt that homeschooling was NOT our best option and i don’t presume to tell others that they should have chosen differently.

You are off base in my commentary with that poster. That poster made a whole slew of excuses why they couldn’t home school, including the cost of their lifestyle. That is all I was addressing. I did not judge their choices, just pointed out that it doesn’t take the richest family to afford that choice.

This post (#137) and most of (#138) summarize my views on the matter exactly.

A good read on the history of socialist government schooling aka pagan indoctrination is contained in Shortt’s “The Harsh Truth About Public Schools”.

Stop complaining, stop making excuses and remove your children from the socialist government schools.

Fortunately, my kids are grown and I don’t have grandkids yet. If I live in the same city as my grandkids, I plan to offer to home school them myself.

I applaud you. How did you manage to home school your kids while you were working full time (or did you maybe work from home)? I’m sorry to be nosy, but it seems a fair question if you think no one has an excuse not to home school.
