Washington D.C., May 28, 2009 / 01:35 am (CNA).- In a surprising move, President Barack Obama announced on Wednesday evening that Miguel H. Diaz, Ph.D., a 45 year old lay Liberation theologian born in Havana (Cuba) is his pick to become the United States Ambassador to the Holy See.
An associate professor of theology at St. John's University and the College of Saint Benedict in Minnesota, Diaz, a strong Obama supporter and father of four, earned his bachelors degree from St. Thomas University in Miami, Fla., and his masters and doctorate in theology from the University of Notre Dame at Notre Dame, Ind.
Diaz is author of the book "On Being Human: U.S. Hispanic and Rahnerian Perspectives" (Orbis Books, 2001); Co-Editor of "From the Heart of Our People: Explorations in Catholic Systematic Theology" (Orbis Books, 1999;) and author of numerous articles and book chapters inspired in the Latino and Black liberation theology, such as the forthcoming The Life-Giving Reality of God from Black, Latin-American, and U.S. Hispanic Theological Perspectives, Otherness in Black Catholic and Latino/a Catholic Theologies and the Otherness of God, and Outside the Survival of Community there is no Salvation, in Building Bridges, Doing Justice: Constructing a Latino/a Ecumenical Theology (Orbis Press, 2009.)
If at all possible, ABWM (anything but white male).
The Vatican should refuse to receive him.
He’s only doing this to antagonize the Vatican. He gets away with it because the Vatican doesn’t have nukes. He doesn’t dare do this to China or Russia, although I do see him doing it at some point.
Liberation theology is a school of theology within Christianity, particularly in the Roman Catholic Church. It emphasizes the Christian mission to bring justice to the poor and oppressed, particularly through political activism. Its theologians consider sin the root source of poverty, believing sin as exploitative capitalism and class war by the rich against the poor.
Liberation Theologians use political theory, primarily democratic socialism, to help understand how to combat poverty. Some elements of certain liberation theologies have been rejected by leaders of the hierarchy of the Catholic Church over the last 30 years.[1] At its inception, liberation theology was predominantly found in the Catholic Church after the Second Vatican Council. It is often cited as a form of Christian socialism, and it has enjoyed widespread influence in Latin America and among the Jesuits, although its influence diminished within Catholicism after liberation theologians were harshly admonished by Pope John Paul II (leading to the curtailing of its growth).
The current Pope, Benedict XVI, has long been known as an opponent of certain standards of liberation theology, and issued several condemnations of tendencies within it while head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith
And stupid Catholics will still vote for 0bama.
I thought “liberation theology” was formally declared a heresy by the Vatican in the 60’s.
If this guy is, in fact, a heretic, it is a deliberate slap in the face by Obama to Catholics everywhere.
Yes, I hope the Vatican rejects Diaz.
This appointment by Obama is nothing but an insult to Pope Benedict XVI and the Vatican.
Ahh yes, Liberation Theology...it’s is the window dressing used by filthy animals to cover up the bloody and brutal history of Scientific Communism and make it more acceptable in the largely Catholic Latin American world.
It now time to fish or cut bait.
I think they should too.
Agreed. The Pope has written about this ideology in a unfavorable light.
I won’t say it, I will get banned. Use your imagination.
He's just giving the country back to its "rightful owners".
This will REALLY go over well with the Vatican.
I hope so. He seems to be a supporter of black theology where human Whites and Jews are the enemy rather than Satan (see Reverend Write).
Boy, Oboma really does hate Whitey. He chose a racist for the supreme court and now another racist as an ambassador.
I just heard the clip of Zero in CA from yesterday. He said, “I want her walking up those marble steps and start providing some justice.” It made me sick.
Give that man a cigar.
You know, when I do reading on these “liberation” theologies, I find it interesting that the only way liberation theology works is when they can keep the “oppressed” convinced that they are unliberated.
Rev. Wright can never say, “Ok guys, go out there and succeed!” because if he did so, the whole basis for his religion would disappear.
Liberation theology? Isn’t that the focus of Jeremiah Wright’s church? The one Obama went to for 20 years?
