48% Favor Government-Mandated Paid Vacation, 42% Say it Will Hurt The Economy
Rasmussen Reports ^ | May 27, 2009

Forty-eight percent (48%) of U.S. voters favor a federal law requiring companies to provide paid vacation for all full-time and part-time employees, but most don’t think it would be good for the economy.

Thirty-eight percent (38%) oppose a law mandating paid vacation, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. A Florida Democratic congressman is planning to introduce such a law in the House this week.

Fifty-two percent (52%) of all voters believe most companies already provide paid vacations for full-time employees. Twenty-four percent (24%) do not think that is true, and another 24% are not sure.

More than three-out-of-four voters (76%) nationwide say it should be a company’s decision how much vacation time to provide for its workers rather than one made by the government. Just 14% say the government should determine how much vacation time a company’s workers get.

Support for mandated paid vacation drops dramatically when the government starts determining how much time-off an employee should get. Only 31% [48% of Dems, 16% of Republicans, and 27% of Independents] of all voters support a law such as the one in France that requires companies to give all employees 30 days of paid vacation time.

Fifty-seven percent (57%) oppose requiring companies to pay all employees for 30 days of vacation each year.

Just 27% of all voters think a law requiring companies to provide paid vacation would be good for the economy. Forty-two percent (42%) say such a law would hurt the economy, while another 21% say it would have no impact.

...

Sixty-nine percent (69%) of Democrats think a law requiring paid vacation is a good idea, but 55% of Republicans disagree. A plurality of voters not affiliated with either party also oppose such a law by an eight-point margin, 45% to 37%.

Yup, America is not in trouble because of the corrupt politicians, she’s in trouble because of the corrupt electorate.

businesses who advertise jobs on craig’s list. My daughter had to take a job with no benefits (EVER) and no vacation. They WERE generous at Christmas and other holidays - but geesh! This was a property management firm. She moved back to Texas after 5 months to another Craig’s list job. no benefits... She doesn’t work there anymore either.

My (NY born) husband finally brought up the subject that we will be leaving the state and going to Texas by retirement. NYC sister-in-law suggested that MOM can visit - just not in summer. In other words, don’t wait for Mom to be gone before you leave...

Bottom line, taxing business more doesn’t create jobs or raise revenue. Never has.

For many people, the alternative to a job with no paid vacation is no job and 52 weeks of unpaid vacation.

1) Computers don't take vacations (at least not paid ones)

2) Over all pay will adjust down for those who still have jobs to cover the "paid" vacations

3) Unemployment goes up

4) Politicians mandate more give-a-ways for the downtrodden "workers"

5) See step 1. Lather, rinse, repeat

Ignorant people, thinking they get free stuff, the tools of tyrants and dictators since the beginning of time.

Yup, America is not in trouble because of the corrupt politicians, she’s in trouble because of the corrupt electorate.

Two great posts that bear repeating.

Most of the service industry (fast food, retail, etc) doesn’t give you any kind of paid time off until you make management. Of course that’s a large part of why those jobs suck and people should have higher goals.

You can always have 365 days vacation by being unemployed.

I'm unemployed now - and it ain't no vacation believe me. I'm applying for jobs I had 10 years ago just to go back to work. This sittin' around is driving me nukkin' futs.
