Bret DeLone winced, wobbled and occasionally whined on Monday as he gamely walked nearly a mile in a pair of high-heeled shoes as a protest of rape, sexual assault and violence.
"I've got a blister on each foot," the Camp Hill resident said, happily slipping out of black high-heeled sling-back open-toe pumps and donning his sneakers. "These shoes didn't fit very well. But I received more than a few compliments on my legs, so I can't complain. It was all for a good cause."
DeLone and about 40 other men wearing women's shoes strolled down Market Street in Camp Hill during "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes," organized by the Stop the Violence Project of the Foundation for Enhancing Communities. Advertisement
The walk, part of the Camp Hill Memorial Day parade, raised about $5,000 for Rape Crisis of Cumberland County and Domestic Violence Services of Cumberland & Perry Counties.
The walk was fun, but the subject is serious, said Cumberland County District Attorney David Freed, who led the walk.
"We average one reported domestic violence a day in Cumberland County," said Freed, whose toenails -- some painted hot pink, some painted purple -- peeped out from flowered flip-flops. "Over the past 20 years, half our homicides have been from domestic violence. The problem is not decreasing even thought there is more awareness about it."
Freed said that court-ordered punishment for domestic violence cases isn't strict enough.
"A first domestic violence offense generally gets probation," he said. "We have maneuvered batterers into a 26-week counseling program that has changed some behavior. But it's rare to see significant jail time for domestic violence cases. A short jail sentence might scare some of the offenders straight."

Seems like a rather pointless way to protest. Most men (myself included) would not participate in it.
I would (have) participate in a march against domestic violence, but not like that.

It has to be a genetic thing- my 7 year old daughter and I went shopping once and she looked at a clothes model and said "what nice shoes"- I didn't even imagine she would notice something like that.
