“NKorea confirms ‘powerful’ nuclear test”
SNIPPET: “SEOUL (AFP) North Korea said it staged a “successful” underground nuclear weapons test which was more powerful than its previous test of an atomic bomb almost three years ago.
The North “successfully conducted one more underground nuclear test on May 25 as part of the measures to bolster up its nuclear deterrent for self-defence in every way as requested by its scientists and technicians,” the Korean Central News Agency said.
“The current nuclear test was safely conducted on a new higher level in terms of its explosive power and technology of its control,” it said.
The results resolved “scientific and technological problems arising in further increasing the power of nuclear weapons and steadily developing nuclear technology.””

If the next nuclear explosion doesn’t derail the six-party talks, Kim will rightly conclude that he faces no real danger of ever having to dismantle his weapons program. North Korea is a mysterious place, but there is no mystery about its foreign-policy tactics: They work. The real mystery is why our administrations — Republican and Democratic — haven’t learned that their quasi-religious faith in the six-party talks is misplaced.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently rejected “linkage” in Russia policy as “old thinking.” Disagreement in one area, she argued, shouldn’t prevent working on “something else that is of overwhelming importance.” Whatever the merits of linkage vis-à-vis Russia, de-linking a second North Korean nuclear test from the six-party talks simply hands Pyongyang permission to proceed.
Even worse, Iran and other aspiring nuclear proliferators will draw precisely the same conclusion: Negotiations like the six-party talks are a charade and reflect a continuing collapse of American resolve. U.S. acquiescence in a second North Korean nuclear test will likely mean that Tehran will adopt Pyongyang’s successful strategy.
Whenever I hear a Bushbot get on a North Korean FR thread and proclaim that somehow this would never happen if the Almighty Cowboy-booted One were still in office, it makes we want to PUKE. They don't know what they are talking about, and that this has spanned BOTH parties; Barack and Hillary, George and Condi, alike.
Cheers to John Bolton! Academically HONEST and independent!!
Not much info on it though!

Ban regrets DPR Korea rocket launch, calls for dialogue
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
4 May 2009 Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today expressed his regret that the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) has, against strong international appeals, proceeded with its planned rocket launch, urging the resumption of diplomatic talks.
According to media reports, the East Asian nation carried out its launch this morning, and the Security Council held an emergency meeting today, at Japan’s request, on the issue.
Given the volatility in the region, as well as a stalemate in interaction among the concerned parties, such a launch is not conducive to efforts to promote dialogue, regional peace and stability, Mr. Ban said in a statement issued by his spokesperson.
He urged the DPRK to comply with Security Council resolutions, such as resolution 1718, which demanded that the country not conduct any further nuclear test or launch of a ballistic missile, following its claims to have conducted a nuclear test in October 2006.
The Secretary-General also appealed to all concerned countries to focus on ways to build confidence and restore dialogue, including the early resumption of the Six-Party Talks, referring to the discussions involving DPRK, Republic of Korea, Japan, China, Russia and the United States.
During today’s closed-door meeting to address the serious situation, Security Council members agreed to consultations on the appropriate reaction by the Council in accordance with its responsibilities given the urgency of the matter, said Ambassador Claude Heller of Mexico, which holds the 15-member body’s rotating presidency this month.
Consultations are expected to continue, and Mr. Heller noted that among members, there is a consensus saying that the Security Council regretted that the Government of the DPRK disregarded the calls by the international community to suspend its launch.

Interesting article. John Bolton is indeed a great man...
Japan says it will respond to the North Korean nuclear test “in a very responsible manner” at the United Nations.
SK, Russia, and China, have said the same tonight.
Sounds like even the big guys in NK own neighborhood can’t stop NK anymore than the “almighty cowboy booted one” you speak of.

North Korea has activated radar for its planned launch of what the country claims as a communications satellite, signaling that the launch is imminent, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency said Sunday, quoting an unnamed South Korean source.
Yonhap also said South Korea’s presidential office convened a National Security Council meeting in a sign confirming the imminent launch. The presidential office earlier said the NSC will be convened only after an actual launch.
North Korea has announced that it would launch a satellite sometime between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. from Saturday to Wednesday.

Official: North Korea fueling missile

North Korea has begun fueling a long-range missile it plans to launch soon, a senior U.S. military official said Wednesday. CNN reported North Korea could be in the final stages of its preparations to launch a satellite into space as early as this weekend.
The news network reported that other officials said the top portion of the rocket was put on very recently. Satellite imagery shows a shroud over the launch stage, preventing direct views of what the missile looks like.

So is this the “Global Event” that the History Channel’s been talking about???
Dude. I’m as nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs. Please take the humor in the spirit intended, as in, you may have little to laugh about very soon.
Yes, it is very serious. Just saw that the NK shot of a medium range missile a little later too. WTF are they doing?!
I'll tell you what event this is, this is the event caused by not winning the Korean war when we had the chance. Just like stopping short in Iraq caused us to have to revisit it, and if we had forced North Vietnam to the conference table instead of running we would be looking at fighting them again too.
Rattling America's and Japan's cages. It's Memorial Day here; what better way to show what a bunch of pansies the USA has become than to schedule nuclear tests and missile launches on what's essentially a military holiday for the USA???

“SKorea military forms crisis team after nuke test report”
Mon, May 25, 2009
AFP
SNIPPET: “SEOUL (AFP) - South Korea’s military on Monday formed a “crisis management” team of general-level officers after North Korea announced it had carried out a nuclear test, the defence ministry said.
“Top military officials led by the defence minister are holding an emergency meeting after forming a crisis management team,” a ministry spokesman said.
A spokesman for the Joint Chiefs of Staff said troops were put on heightened alert “and are closely monitoring movement of North Korean troops.”
The JCS spokesman said Seoul had not yet officially confirmed the test “although it is highly possible.”
A National Security Council meeting chaired by President Lee Myung-Bak began at 1:00 pm (0400 GMT).
North Korea said it staged a “successful” underground nuclear test Monday which was more powerful than its previous test of an atomic bomb almost three years ago.”
