SNIPPET: “SEOUL (AFP) — North Korea said it staged a “successful” underground nuclear weapons test which was more powerful than its previous test of an atomic bomb almost three years ago.

The North “successfully conducted one more underground nuclear test on May 25 as part of the measures to bolster up its nuclear deterrent for self-defence in every way as requested by its scientists and technicians,” the Korean Central News Agency said.

“The current nuclear test was safely conducted on a new higher level in terms of its explosive power and technology of its control,” it said.

The results resolved “scientific and technological problems arising in further increasing the power of nuclear weapons and steadily developing nuclear technology.””

Second nuke test by N. Korea would lead to ‘consequences’: Bosworth

SEOUL, May 8 (Yonhap) — The senior U.S. nuclear envoy on Friday dismissed North Korea’s recent claim that the Obama administration is hostile towards Pyongyang, saying Washington is continuing efforts for bilateral and multilateral dialogue with the communist nation, On a trip here highlighted by the North’s renewed threats to bolster its nuclear arsenal, Stephen Bosworth made clear that if North Korea puts its threats into action, it will face “consequences.”

“If the North Koreans decide to carry out a second nuclear test, we will deal with the consequences of that, and there will be consequences,” Bosworth told reporters after talks with South Korean Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan on ways to resume the six-way talks on Pyongyang’s nuclear program. The negotiations also involve China, Russia, and Japan.

Bosworth said he and the minister discussed “possible steps forward” in the stalled denuclearization process but refused to elaborate.

SEOUL (Reuters) - Seoul stocks fell sharply and the won slipped against the dollar on concerns North Korea's nuclear test early on Monday could sap investor confidence in the South Korean markets and economy.

The main Seoul stock market's benchmark KOSPI fell 2.22 percent by 0326 GMT (11:26 p.m. EDT Sunday), although recouping much of its early more than 6 percent dip. The won was down 1 percent on the day at 1,259.9 per dollar.

North Korea said it successfully conducted a nuclear test on Monday, a move certain to further isolate the impoverished state which argues it has no choice but to build an atomic arsenal to protect itself in a hostile world ...

The United States said Monday that it was trying to determine the authenticity of North Korea’s claim that it conducted a second nuclear test just hours earlier, according to Yonhap News.

“We are aware of the reports of a nuclear test by North Korea,” a State Department official said, requesting anonymity. “We are consulting with our allies. Once we have established the facts, we will have more to say. At this point, I do not have a timeline as to when there will be more to say.”

North Korea said it conducted an underground nuclear test Monday morning (Seoul time) to “bolster up its nuclear deterrent for self-defense.”

South Korean officials said that they detected seismic tremors in the northeastern city of Poongkye-ri, North Hamgyong Province, near the site where the North detonated its first nuclear device in 2006.

The announcement on the North’s nuclear test came as Japanese vessels had stayed away from waters off North Korea’s northeastern coast following the North’s warning of possible missile launches.

N. Korea’s 2nd nuke test occurred few kilometers from previous test site: weather agency

SEOUL, May 25 (Yonhap) — North Korea’s second nuclear test on Monday appeared to have taken place 10-15 km away from the site of the first test in the country’s northeast, Seoul’s weather agency said.

Pyongyang’s state media confirmed the country has “successfully” conducted the underground nuclear test but did not say where it took place.

The Seoul-based Korea Meteorological Administration said it detected seismic waves from the nuclear test 10 to 15 km away from the 2006 test site around the town of Kilju, North Hamgyong Province.

“The waves were detected 10 to 15 kilometers away from the previous test site,” said the administration’s earthquake detector, Yoo Yong-gyu.

The agency also said the artificial earthquake was detected at 9:54 a.m. with a 4.5 magnitude. In the previous test, the detected magnitude was 3.6, it said.

The North said on the second test was conducted on “a new higher level in terms of its explosive power and technology of its control.”

See what happened is a couple of days ago they told maritimers to stay out of the way of those intermediate missiles. So everyone expected in the next few days they would start launching these Scuds or Nodongs or whatever the hell they are, toward Japan.

Then, this morning, comes the underground nuclear test at Kilju County, and then within about four hours, launching these intermediates into the Sea of Japan. As I meant to say, GET READY FOR MORE. They learned from al-Qaeda. I.e. they will not just launch probably one today, but will keep it up to start to inflict terror on South Korea and Japan and put US forces on nervous alert in both countries. I think the fireworks have just become today, actually.... 1:30 a.m. Eastern Monday, 10:30 p.m. Pacific Sunday, 2:30 p.m. Korea/Japan Monday
