Helio Castroneves Wins Third Indianapolis 500 Sunday, May 24, 2009
INDIANAPOLIS Helio Castroneves has won his third Indianapolis 500, beating 2005 winner Dan Wheldon by more than 2 seconds. Danica Patrick was third, the best finish by a woman at Indianapolis.
Castroneves, who started from the pole, had a half-second lead over teammate Ryan Briscoe before a hard crash by Vitor Meira and rookie Raphael Matos brought out the yellow caution with 26 laps to go. Briscoe had to come in for fuel, moving Wheldon up to second and Patrick third.
The green came out after 183 of the 200 laps, and Castroneves began pulling away for good

Just curious - why aren’t women’s races held separately ?
Great race, Congrats to Helio....Bringing back open-wheel racing to where it should be, along with a great bunch of young drivers!! Nice ride Danica!
Only 11 Americans in the field of 33 this year. The luster of the Indy 500 is long gone.
Oh if only...
Personally, that’s what I wanted, but Helio winning really was the best outcome. An unlikely American hero, a transplant superstar driver from Brazil.
Are you blind man? Did you not look at the post before you? 10 more laps, and the hottest female athelete in America mightve won!
I don’t recall Unser or Foyt being that attractive
Oh Yeah Thank you!!!!!!!!!
lol...look, if I want to see hot chicks, I don’t watch auto racing. ...especially since the hot chick in question is covered to toe in gear during the competition.
Women’s tennis is another story — at least I can see legs, flying short skirts, and bouncing racks. ..err...rackets.
The best drivers in the world avoid Indy racing like the plague these days.
Helio id turning into one of the good ones. Actually winning one Indy race would be nice, but three! Danica is doing MUCH better than I ever dreamed she would. She too looks good...
The Firestone "Take Me Out to the Brickyard" ad, in contrast, was very well done... even if the repeated it a dozen or so times too many.
I saw lots of Honda ads (obviously), and even a few for Kia and Maaco. Didn't see one for Chevy, though - and they provided the pace car. Unless I missed it, it seems Government Motors fumbled the ball - again.
Lord she is soooo not guilty.
Guess I'm missing the point of the question... but what would be the possible motivation for holding separate races? There is no reason a woman can not drive at the same level, same skill, same reflexes and same nerves as a man.
Granted, not many do but there's no physical handicap to justify separate events.
Congratulations, Helio, on winning the 500 and being acquitted of tax evasion charges. Victory is sweet!
I watched part of the race and all I could think of was her getting into a flaming wreck. I hope she is covered %100 in Nomex, winning ain’t worth losing them looks.
There used to be separate races for women I am guessing decades ago. This was when there were no women in the top ranks of racing and it happened at the club level and were called powder puff races. Those days are long gone and the reason is the skill set needed to drive race cars doesn’t require brute strength where men would be at an advantage. The real pioneer for women in racing is a lady called Shirley Muldowney.
not to mention the Honda engines...
