1984: The Sequel - A Real World in Virtual Catacombs (GPS coordinates on your home)
Remnant ^ | 05/22/09 | Michael J. Matt

(Posted 05/22/09 http://www.RemnantNewspaper.com) If you still live here in America these days you’ll soon be visited by one of the 140,000 workers recently hired by the federal government to collect global positioning satellite (GPS) coordinates on your home. Over the next year or so every home in America will reportedly have its GPS coordinates logged in with Uncle Sam, right down to the front door. In other words, Big Brother will be watching you—literally.

This $700 million project funded by your tax dollars, of course, is part of a data collection program the government is running allegedly in preparation for the 2010 census. I might have wondered if the whole story weren’t some kind of hoax had an agent not recently dropped by my neighbor’s house.

I’m just going to move mine. Just a bit. About 4 feet to the right. That way, the jackbooted thugs with GPS can line up in the dark to assault my castle, and run into a brick wall!

“But the GPS said there was a door there!”

Just in time for the GPS satellites to stop functioning a year or two from now, as has been projected. Idiots.

I wonder if any people in the history of the world ever lived under more surveillance than we are at the moment.

By "we", does he mean Americans? If so, he's not at all aware of what life is like in the U.K. right now.

They do not do Google searches but rather are taught how to do actual searches with research material, books and trips to the library with their mother or father

How's that working out for you? Less and less research material is available in printed form these days.

Even when it was all in printed form, how easy was it to track down even a single item of information? Fine, you've found one source on the topic. To make sure you're getting a balanced treatment of the topic, find five more sources.

I had one of the idiots show up at my place a few weeks ago. She just sat in the driveway and never came to the door.

I went outside and ask who she was and what she wanted.

She babbled something about the government and the census. Demanded to know my address. ( I live way off the road, have no mailbox or house number markings)

I told her she was trespassing and ran her off. She was still playing with the GPS, so I doubt she got the signal back in time.

The census needs addresses so the forms can be sent out. Nothing remotely different from the census for the past several decades in that aspect.

The might need an address but they sure as hell don't need to get a GPS fix on your house so they can give the information to the UN!

Even with my address, they will have a hard time mailing anything to a home with no mail box.

Gee...

The IRS manages to find my address just fine. So does the US Post Office. The gubmint also managed to find my address just fine for the 3 censuses I have been through, too.

The census is not allowed to gather personal information from other government agencies.

There’s no “big central government computer” where such information is maintained, anyway.

The census has always tried to accurately locate the exact position of houses, again, nothing new compared to previous decades - however previously this has been done by census workers scribbling on maps in pencil, using their car odometer, etc.

The reason is that various municipalities, counties, etc. know how many people are within their borders. Also, with elaborate gerrymandering, congressional district borders are so complex it can be hard to place housing units in the correct district.

The GPS is simply to make this faster and more accurate.

There’s no function of this census that is new, just the tools to complete it are new.
