May 14, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A prominent former Soviet dissident says that the European Union is disturbingly similar in its ideological foundations, and its methods, to the Soviet Union. Author and political activist Vladimir Konstantinovich Bukovsky, who spent 12 years in the Russian gulag, is now warning the people of Europe that they are in danger of allowing a new totalitarian superstate to rise.
"It is really puzzling to me," says Bukovsky in the documentary "Britain on the Brink," "that having just buried one monster, the Soviet Union, another remarkably similar one, the European Union, is being built." The same ideology, he said, underpins both systems. "The EU is the old Soviet model, presented in Western guise."
Bukovsky has joined his voice with many who are warning that a small number of leftist oligarchs in Brussels, with their allies in national parliaments, are in the process of creating a new communist-style superstate called "Europe" in which national sovereignty, and democracy, will be a thing of the past.
He warned that the EU is employing an "intellectual gulag known as political correctness" to suppress opposition. "When anyone tries to speak their mind on questions of race or gender, or if their views differ from those approved, they will be ostracised.
"This is the beginning of the gulag. The beginning of your loss of freedom."

It was a natural progression, after reading Solzhenitsyn.
