On Nov. 14, 2007, presidential candidate Barack Obama met with employees of Google at the companys headquarters in Mountain View, Calif. After a discussion of the war in Iraq, he was asked to give his views on Iran, Pakistan and the U.S. terrorist detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Obama spoke at length about Iran. He spoke at length about Pakistan. And then he said, Last point, Guantanamo. Thats easy. Close down Guantanamo. the audience broke into applause. [snip]
That wasnt the first, or the last time he said that; Obama went down his national security laundry list hundreds of times during the campaign, rarely, if ever, giving Guantanamo more than a few words.
Indeed, looking over statements from Obamas presidential campaign, whats striking is the shallowness of his position on Guantanamo. But he said what he needed to say, first to win the Democratic nomination and then to win the White House.
Now, things have changed. Obama has issued an executive order that Guantanamo will be shut down no later than Jan 22, 2010. He has tried to charm and persuade our allies to accept some prisonersand has gotten virtually nowhere. He still hasnt settled on which procedures will be used to dispose of the cases involving the most hardened al Qaeda detainees. And now, the Senate has votedby a 90-to-6 marginto deny Obama the $80 million he sought to pay for closing down Guantanamo.
The easy campaign rhetoric no longer works. The Senate vote was a sign in a big, flashing letters: Its time for a concrete plan. So on Thursday, Obama traveled to the National Archives to deliver a much-hyped speech on his intentions. And after a lot of speechifyingtheres still no concrete plan.

It’s better to remain silent and thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
Empty Suit!
Obama is as shallow as they get
“Empty Suit!”

You took the words right out of my mouth! :)
“But do you really believe Obama didnt know what was involved in closing Guantanamo back when he was giving all those campaign speeches?”
No, but he was campaigning like a hippie malcontent to other hippie malcontents. All lip and no action, BECAUSE HE’S NEVER ACCOMPLISHED ANYTHING!
Yes, and the rest of his campaign was so deep.....Hope....Change....yeah, yeah, yea....
That is precisely his dilemma.
The thing he does best, is speak. The world has learned that when time for action arrives, the man falters. He has no choice but to open his mouth and hope the teleprompter is correct.
He learned yesterday that it sometimes is not when he read the name of William Gates the Secretary of Defense. That statement should be grounds for resignation. It is a million times worse than the potatoe spelling incident.
Lets give DumbO a break, he is just an empty suit reading what TOTUS has for him to read!
Does anyone seriously believe ZerO read his grammy award winning autobiography before recording it?
The layers are slowly being peeled away.
McCain was also in favor of closing Gitmo. It was one of his campaign themes along with amnesty and a cap and trade system.
Oh but I disagree. John Kerry has it. Obama just won't ask! Kerry had a "plan" for everything.
PELLEY: Would you close Guantanamo Bay?
MCCAIN: Yes. I would close Guantanamo Bay. And I would move those prisoners to Fort Leavenworth. And I would proceed with the tribunals.
PELLEY: Why? What’s wrong with the way it was handled?
MCCAIN: Guantanamo Bay has become an image throughout the world which has hurt our reputation. Whether we deserve it or not, the reality is Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib have harmed our reputation in the world, thereby harming our ability to win the psychological part of the war against radical Islamic extremism.
York was on NPR round table discussion last night. The liberals were back peddling on the event and avoiding the content. York clearly pointed out Obama’s antagonistic rhetoric devoid of concrete PLANs. Californians need to know waterboarding saved Los Angeles.
“No, but he was campaigning like a hippie malcontent to other hippie malcontents.”
It’s all too very easy to sell a myopic idiot a steaming pile of you know what. So many are guilty of this over and over again.
He doesn’t “speak”. He reads.
And after numerous photo-op “speeches” (talk—talk—talk, Obama, they tell him) since he’s occupied the White House, he has become incredibly boring. His ping-pong-match head movements and his style of dropping the word at the end of a sentence just to convey erudition (which isn’t actually there) have just become his schtick.
“”I guess Obama took those Staples commercials to heart and thought if he had an easy button installed on the desk in the Oval Office, all would go right in the world””
What a great idea! Are those buttons really available? I would love to send the ZERO one.....or have millions of people send him one!!!
