Despite bans on the practice in seven states and the District of Columbia, 26 percent of drivers still drum out messages on their phones - even though 83 percent of drivers say the practice should be illegal...Americans sent about a trillion text messages in 2008 - triple the amount sent just in 2007 - or about 3.5 million a day.

I am surprised that more reckless driving citations are not issued for this.
talking on a cell phone is illegal in california,
but i still see people doing it.
A former student of mine called to talk about publication of a book of his. He mentioned the problem he has with students who are constantly texting in class while he’s trying to teach. So, what would I do about that?
I told him that only a few years ago, nobody was doing that. My less good students had ipods, and listened to music with one ear while ignoring the lectures with the other.
In this day & age, if it’s not one thing, it’s another. Back when I was a student, we used to draw pictures or play tic tac toe in the lecture room.
I was almost taken out while waiting for a light by a txt-ing UCLA student a few weeks ago. After he missed me, he almost got T-boned when he ran the light....but I bet he’s still out there with his crackberry while driving.
Hey, Obama - tax texting (call it taxting), and the deficit is gone.
A friend of mine was killed by a lady who was texting. He was stopped in traffic on the highway and she rear ended him at about 60 mph.
He was in his low thirties and left 3 young daughters, two of which will have no memory of their father.
That said, we don’t need additional laws. What we need to do is equally enforce the traffic laws that already exist. People have been hearing about DUI’s for so long and the continual harping by MADD has given people the imprssion that DUI is the only dangerous driving. If we applied the same punishment to those that kill, regardless of BAC, then people might start taking all driving seriously.
he lived?
LOL!
The fool sailed through the intersection and then hit the brakes....I did make contact because I was seriously PO’d, and I thought he was DUI at first, but no, just texting away. He got off with a stern lecture. Lucky on all counts...
She should be in prison.
