California elected officials' pay to be cut 18%

A state panel this morning slashed the salaries of elected state officials by 18% -- a day after voters rejected a plan by the governor and Legislature to address the budget crisis.

Citing pay cuts and layoffs being imposed on rank-and-file state workers, the California Citizens Compensation Commission approved the reduction for the governor, legislators and other state officials elected next year.

"I think they should share in the sacrifices that everyone else has had to encounter," said Commissioner Kathy Sands, a former Auburn mayor, after the panel's 5-1 vote at a meeting in Burbank.

The commission had wanted to decrease current officials' pay, but the panel's attorney said California law does not allow that.

A good start. Now, how about slashing the pay of UC and CSU administrators too? They are paid way too much, especially given what they actually do that they try to pass off as “work”.

How about having the state shoot one assembly member each week, name to be drawn from a hat, until the budget is balanced.

Hmmmmm....wish I'd have thought of that...at least begin waterboarding them until they memorize & understand the Bill of Rights....

Then change the damned law to allow these miscreants to suffer from their own stupidity.

It’s probably in the California Constitution. It’s in the Indiana Constitution; a public official’s salary cannot be cut. There is some rationale for it; the idea being that an official in political disfavor cannot be hounded out of office by impoverishment, only to have the more acceptable successor get a big windfall. Under the present circumstances it doesn’t hold up.

I have suggested a simialr solution to ending abortion on demand. every female seeking to have an alive unborn child murdered via abortion must undergo immediate sterilization with the hired killing. That would cut the abortion stats to 1/3 of previous within months, and the disincentive would lower it even further within a year. The pause to think about what is personally happening to her and the alive unborn child would drive the numbers down to only include those in danger of losing their life if they allow the pregnancy to proceed to birth.

“Now what about all of that bogus overtime many run up to pad their retirements???”

The Beagle Amendment...Prop Br549

No government employee shall make over 100K per year.

Jobs that have paid more than 100k in the past, working overtime, shall have their hourly rate cut to the point that they would make less than 100k , working the same number of hours.

Unions shall be exempt, exempt from holding any government jobs.

Does this begin to cancel out the TWO pay raises they gave themselves in the past SIX months? I doubt it.

And how many consultants are making a killing off the state? How many commissions are there and who get’s paid to be on them and why? If this is a once in a hundred year crisis then those cockroaches need to act like it is a crisis. After reading a few headlines from the MSM it obvious that many think that it should be business as usual and that this crisis only affects the private sector.
Let’s hope this is a wake up alarm with no snooze button.

I’m only sad that the margin of victory was not higher at defeating these outrageous propositions.

How about using the term ‘Politicians’. That erases all doubt about who you’re talking about. :-)

Not nearly enough. 50% should be the minimum starting point. What are they going to do, quit? Fat chance. If they got paid nothing they would still be making out like bandits on all the perks, benefits, under the table graft, etc.
