Good morning, California voters. Do you feel better, now that you've gotten that out of your system?
You wanted to show the state's politicians just how mad you are at them. And you did. Boy, did you ever.
Proposition 1A with its taxes and its spending limit? Too much of one and not enough of the other, you said (or was it the other way around), and voted it down. Never mind that the taxes go into efffect anyway. You showed 'em.
Proposition 1B? That was a tougher call.
Proposition 1C? No way. You like the lottery just like it is. And all they were going to do with that extra $5 billion was spend it.
Propositions 1D and 1E? Forget it. You had already voted to put money into preschool and mental health programs. You're not taking it out now.
And 1F? Heck, yeah! Let's not pay our legislators if they can't pass a budget on time. So what if it likely won't have any effect, or that this year they actually passed a budget months earlier than they needed to? That's not the point.
The point is that you're sick and tired of all this political mumbo-jumbo. So you showed those politicians who's in charge. You. You're now officially in charge – of a state that will be something like $25 billion in the hole for the fiscal year beginning July 1.
So, now that you've put those irksome politicians in their place, maybe it's time to think about this: Since you're in charge, exactly what do you intend

CA teachers are paid more than 30% over the national average. CA voters never see a union backed spending increase they don’t like. And $3 billion in corporate welfare for pharmaceutical companies to develop new drugs and treatments using stem cell research to sell back to the tax payers who paid for them? Hell yeah! Throw in the fact that most spending and spending increases are mandated.
There needs to be a constitutional amendment that bans all spending mandates. California is almost to the point where more than 100% of its budget is already dedicated to required spending. All feel good spending measures need to be stripped. If it’s not necessary to run the government or fund entitlements, it’s got to go. Finally, CA tax code needs to be brought more in line with what they’re doing in Texas, where business is booming, citizens pay not state income tax, and their government has a surplus.
About the only thing CA is going to get right is clearing the illegals out of the prisons, and that is only if they actually follow through with deportation (and hold them until they are deported.)

I tend to disagree, my FRiend. If CA suddenly "found" a trillion dollars, how long do you think it'd take the legislature to spend it? My guess is measured in hours, not days.
They could stop all state spending immediately -- and they should.
I bet you would.

On the bright side, the fix is likely to last a few generations...
I am of an age to remember when there was an unwritten rule about private versus government employment. Working for the government was politicized, lower pay and less retirement in return for almost guaranteed employment, less stress and more time off.
Now we see the results of bracket creep as it becomes readily apparent that as the politicians feathered their own nests, they also brought forward the 'civil servants'. Now pay scales often EXCEED industry standards, and retirements become luxurious at ever younger ages but the taxpayers have to delay retirement because their companies have died.
It is long past time to move government retirement from pensions to "we will help fund your own 401-type". Lets start with CALPERS!

*commissions = the "progressive" name for patronage and nepotism government fraud.
