CA teachers are paid more than 30% over the national average. CA voters never see a union backed spending increase they don’t like. And $3 billion in corporate welfare for pharmaceutical companies to develop new drugs and treatments using stem cell research to sell back to the tax payers who paid for them? Hell yeah! Throw in the fact that most spending and spending increases are mandated.
There needs to be a constitutional amendment that bans all spending mandates. California is almost to the point where more than 100% of its budget is already dedicated to required spending. All feel good spending measures need to be stripped. If it’s not necessary to run the government or fund entitlements, it’s got to go. Finally, CA tax code needs to be brought more in line with what they’re doing in Texas, where business is booming, citizens pay not state income tax, and their government has a surplus.
About the only thing CA is going to get right is clearing the illegals out of the prisons, and that is only if they actually follow through with deportation (and hold them until they are deported.)

Do you feel better, now that you've gotten that out of your system?
The reality is that, the voters out there caused all the problems which the state is now having.
Sure, the legislators and the governor run the government, but, who elected the idiots in the first place? California voters brought all those problems upon themselves.
There was one resolution missing and which no one thought about putting up for a vote...
That missing resolution should've included language to prevent any more socialists, aka, liberals from being elected to state or local government. Only then can the problems plaguing California start to disappear.

There is little hope that CA can cut the spending fast enough to keep up with the declining tax revenues.I tend to disagree, my FRiend. If CA suddenly "found" a trillion dollars, how long do you think it'd take the legislature to spend it? My guess is measured in hours, not days.
They could stop all state spending immediately -- and they should.

It is going to be one big sight to see when the Government can't screw real workers out of their money anymore. The leeches will whine bloody murder - lib MSM will hawk their plights to high heaven. And, then, there will be rioting, the likes of which never seen.Bring it on!
On the bright side, the fix is likely to last a few generations...

Having spent a wonderful 6 months in the SF Bay area as a child when parents went to the Army Language School, I can remember California in a more 'golden age'. What I am seeing in CA now echos what my favorite author, Heinlein, once wrote; "In any sufficiently advanced society, civil servant equates to civil master" and this is by no means limited to California.
I am of an age to remember when there was an unwritten rule about private versus government employment. Working for the government was politicized, lower pay and less retirement in return for almost guaranteed employment, less stress and more time off.
Now we see the results of bracket creep as it becomes readily apparent that as the politicians feathered their own nests, they also brought forward the 'civil servants'. Now pay scales often EXCEED industry standards, and retirements become luxurious at ever younger ages but the taxpayers have to delay retirement because their companies have died.
It is long past time to move government retirement from pensions to "we will help fund your own 401-type". Lets start with CALPERS!

Great list of wasteful agencies - thanks.
Here is another comment in the Sac Bee's editorial section from an alert reader:
pnachman wrote on 05/20/2009 12:08:19 PM: The Bee's editorial board's actual, heartfelt reaction to the five propositions' defeats was in their **earlier** editorial -- at this same URL!!! -- titled "You did it! Uh, so what now?," which was a masterpiece of stupidity and insult to the voters. Fortunately, you can see what these geniuses really "thought" by going to the archived version at Free Republic. If this link ... www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2254828/posts ...doesn't show up here or doesn't work for you, Google on "You did it Uh, so what now" and you'll find it near the top of the hits.

RE: "What is the age of this editor? 10 years or less? God, how infantile. But then, it is a Liberal. So, no surprise."
Most likely the best and brightest Bee brains are Marxist/Alinsky street rabble survivors of the 1960s or deeply influenced by same.
The 1960s Marxist street rabble and their ideological issue are skid marks on our society's shorts.

In the last 10 years, the CA budget has grown from $69 B to $145 B. More than double in 10 years.
When the Gov explains why, hell know the answer. Perhaps the Excremento Bee and its editors will also get a clue.
But I doubt it.

You asked for this job. Now you've got it, so get on it. Awesome! Just give me the budget & a red pen & I'll take care of it in about an hour!I don't mean to sound superior, but it would take me closer to 15 minutes.
Throw in the legislature and "commissions"* and perhaps 10 minutes more...
*commissions = the "progressive" name for patronage and nepotism government fraud.
