Conservative Rep. Tom Price emerging as GOP’s bulldog
Politico ^ | May 20, 2009 | Victoria McGrane

Posted on 05/20/2009 4:31:26 AM PDT by Scanian

Republicans respect him as a relentless and creative attack dog. Democrats deride him as a rigid, bomb-throwing ideologue.

Either way, Georgia Rep. Tom Price has emerged as a major player in the House GOP.

“I’ve never seen a guy who could carry on so many battles at one time,” said Texas Rep. Jeb Hensarling, who preceded Price as chairman of the Republican Study Committee, a caucus

of conservative House Republicans. “On our side of the aisle, people view Tom as one of the most effective advocates of the Republican message.”

Price clearly relishes a good political fight.

Price’s profile among his caucus grew last summer when he helped spark the infamous gas-price revolt against Democrats’ decision to leave town for the long August recess without voting on a measure to open new land to domestic oil and gas exploration.

After Democrats voted to adjourn for the day, spoiling GOP plans to have dozens of members give floor speeches on the issue, Price recalls that a “crestfallen” Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) asked what they should do. “And I said we ought to just give our speeches,” Price said in an interview with POLITICO.

The visitors’ gallery happened to be packed with tourists. Price remembers looking up at the visitors and saying, “‘They’re up there.’ And then I looked at the press gallery ... and said, ‘They’re up there.’”

Price is my representative and he is wonderful. Much better than our
senators, chambliss or isaksen.

Infamous? Is the writer implying this was a bad/detestable revolt? What myopic bias.

Price said his tactics and his work, both as chairman of the RSC and as a member of House committees, serve the two main goals of the minority: to provide a contrast to the majority Democrats and to hold them accountable for their actions.

I suggest Price replace Steele. Anyone second the motion?

I’ll second that.

Of course Politico is biased. But occaisionally they publish a story worth reading.

Hopefully, Steele’s read the article and made up his mind what to do and say for today. Tomorrow, who knows?

Price is playing to the press to advance in the party, but ask him about 0bama's eligibility and he sounds like a dem spokesperson dutifully regurgitating how 0bama "demonstrated" his eligibility during the campaign and that he was born in Hawaii. Unfortunately he offers absolutely no substantiation and apparently lacks the "cahones" to even broach the subject with zer0 or anyone else.

Make no mistake, he is a politician.

I like this too (from the article):

“He’s got a very fixed ideology,” said Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), the committee’s chairman, adding that other conservatives on the committee — including Hensarling — are more flexible than Price.

“What [Price] does doesn’t affect the product; it affects the message,” Frank said. “He’s not trying to attract Democratic votes; he’s trying to embarrass Democrats.”

Price’s reaction to Frank’s assessment: “One person’s embarrassment is another person’s accountability.”

Being more flexible in Barney Frank's parlance is not a good thing. It is a code word for abandoning your values and the truth and letting the voter get the worst of it.

When I read this, this is what I see:

After their car ran over a nail, flattening one of the tires, a "crestfallen" Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) asked what they should do. "And I said we ought to just change the tire," Price said.

I cringe that we have men so devoid of imagination, courage, leadership, and initiative in Washington. But I am pleased we have "do it anyway" people like Price. Unfortunately Tom Price is no longer my representative, since I moved south from Price's district in 2008, into the district of the corrupt Democrat David Scott.

Price's YouTube videos have been simple and effective. I bet Pence thinks YouTube is your kid's pool toy.

Don't be so hasty. You won't find one who isn't a politician. It is their business to be obtuse and pick and choose their battles.

He's not a poster/typist on FR. It is easy to armchair quarterback.

More of us, actually every one of us should sit on a local school board, park district board, library board, etc.

It will open your eyes to the difficulty of institutional change. It takes a lot of time. The entire system is biased in favor of the Leviathan state.

Look. I'm in his district. This is the same district that Newt was from and before him Larry McDonald (arch conservative). Price is not bad, but the absence of being bad, does not make him good. He has been in Washington for a while - about 5 years and only now has begun to speak out on anything. Up to now he has done nothing but drawn a steady, ever increasing, paycheck. He's no RINO, but until he does something substantial and until he takes a stand and challenges the dims toe to toe, he is just another politician.

If being a politician is so hard, then by all means they should quit. No one forces these guys to run.

I’ve followed Price a long time.

He does speak up. He is NOT a RINO.

He has consistently voted conservative, and stood out as such when the majority of RINOs didn’t.

He is the real deal. There are about 5 politicians in Washington I trust, he is one of them.

Don’t take my word for it (or anyone elses here) Check out his website. His voting record. His speeches.

I never said he was a RINO, but I haven't seen what I would call leadership out of his either. His website may show that he has done great things but I want to know just what it is that he saw that makes him believe that 0bama "demonstrated his qualifications for President during the campaign". All he had to do was stand up and object when the electoral votes were being counted.

If you don't believe me, send him an email and ask about 0bama's qualifications as a "natural born" citizen. Twice, over about four months, before and after the election, I asked and got the same canned response that could've been written by the dims. All I'm asking for is him, or someone, in Congress to stand up and show some cahones. Dick Cheney is the only one that seems to have the guts to even question 0bama.
