Insurgents in Afghanistan, fighting from some of the world's poorest and most remote regions, have managed to maintain a guerrilla war against materially superior U.S. and Afghan forces.
Arms and ordnance collected from dead insurgents hint at one possible reason: Of 30 rifle magazines recently taken from insurgents' corpses, at least 17 contained cartridges identical to ammunition that the United States had provided to Afghan government forces.
The presence of this ammunition among the dead in an area of fighting near the Pakistan border suggests that munitions procured by the Pentagon have leaked from Afghan forces for use against U.S. troops.

At least they’re not saying it’s coming from the Gun Show Loopholes in the US like we hear ad nauseum regarding Mexico.
Give it time.....
I don’t....
Lots of Mujahideen leftovers from russian afghan conflict remain. As well intercepted / hijacked contracted trucking etc has munitions on board. Multiple sources in addition to illegal or political redirects.
Just what I saw and my opinion......
The Taliban uses Ak-47s. The Afghan Army (except a few elite units) uses Ak-47s. They all use new Chinese Ammo and left over Russian ammo.
What a flippin surprise
Somebody bought a crapload of 7.62x39. Those Russian factories turn it out by the shipload. It has been scarce for over a year now. Someone bought up enough to start a decent sized war.
WOLF?
Obama’s fault.
“The presence of this ammunition among the dead in an area of fighting near the Pakistan border suggests that munitions procured by the Pentagon have leaked from Afghan forces for use against U.S. troops.”
Honestly, I would not be surprised. During the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the Afghani government troops were often more sympathetic to the Mujahadeen rebels than the “allied” Soviet troops. I can’t help but think Taliban forces have more than a few sympathetic ears in the current Afghani Army.
I also think you could have a case where soldiers or civilians are doing business with elements of the Taliban not so much out of sympathy but greed. I bet the Tallies are paying well for ammo and weapons - probably a lot more than a supply clerk makes in a week or month.
All just speculation on my part, of course. If it is indeed the case, I’m hoping our guys find the “leakers” very soon (and find a lovely spot in the desert to bury what’s left of them).
The NYT is a propaganda and disinformation rag..
Just wait until the same is found out about Mexico...
I know.....I know....
Holy cow, if this is true - that’s why you can’t get Wolf ammo in the US anymore! 3 years ago we were swimming in the stuff! US Gov is buying it all up!
This is total BS. Wolf is a Russian firm that is probably the largest distributor of 7.62x39 in the world which is the main cartridge used by the jihadis. I would be surprised if they didn’t find it. It is sold in the US but also sold all over the world. I doubt if there is any evidence that this ammo was sold in the US or to the US military before ending up in terrorist possession. Same for the Czech ammo which is probably cold war surplus. Look to Russia for the connection.
The headstamps mean very little in themselves. Study of lot numbers on the wooden cases, and shipping data from the pallets would say much more. Fat chance of finding that out.
And they want us to use serial-numbered ammo?
I keep hearing that the permits required to bring it in are being held up.
Of course, this is only hearsay, and I would appreciate if someone could provide information to either verify or refute the rumor.
One well placed nuke and we wouldn’t have an ammo shortage!
